A valve plate (28) is positioned to cover the cylinder (24). The valve plate (28) includes a suction port (32) positioned on the diametral axis (33) and a discharge port (34). A suction valve (36) having a first end (44) is coupled to the valve plate (28) and a second end (46) is movable between a first position, in contact with suction port (32), and a second position. The suction valve (36) is arranged such that it is on an angle relative to the diametral axis (33).
