A system for adjusting the flow of fluid along the gutter line of a continuous inkjet printer includes a variable flow restrictor (1) fitted into the gutter line (3), and a pressure transducer (5) for measuring the pressure in the gutter line (3) downstream of the variable flow restrictor (1). The variable flow restrictor (1) is controlled in response to the output of the pressure transducer (5) in order to maintain the downstream pressure substantially constant. Since airflow along the gutter line (3) has a lower flow resistance than a slug of ink, the variable flow restrictor (1) will apply a greater flow restriction to the gutter (line 3), in order to maintain constant pressure at the pressure transducer (5), when there is only air in the gutter line (3) as compared with when a slug of ink passes along the gutter line (3). Accordingly, the system responds dynamically to restrict the flow of air along the gutter line (3) when no ink is passing along it, thereby reducing the volume of air sucked along the gutter line (3) while maintaining adequate suction to clear ink reliably away from the gutter (103). This reduction in the amount of air passing along the gutter line (3) can reduce the amount of solvent lost from the ink during operation of an inkjet printer.

A continuous ink jet printer has a line (69a) for venting at least some of the air that has been sucked along the gutter line (17), and a line (69b) for recirculating back to the printhead (25) at least some of the air that has been sucked down the gutter line (17). Preferably the relative proportions of vented air and recirculated air can be varied, so as to reduce solvent loss during normal operation but allow increased solvent loss if the ink is over-dilute. Preferably the air recirculated to the printhead is connected directly into the flow path from the gutter orifice to the source of gutter suction, without opening into the space containing the ink jet. This reduces the tendency of solvent in the recirculated air condense on the printhead electrodes.

Improved data converter circuitry for a CT data acquisition system is disclosed which makes use of a programmable gain amplifier whose gain is set according to the magnitude of a detector input signal by selecting one of several resistor voltage-divider paths at the input of a fixed gain amplifier. An auto-zero loop uses an integrating op-amp to provide periodic correction to offset voltage of the fixed gain amplifier. In a modified embodiment, an auto-zero loop is provided for correction of both the fixed gain amplifier and a serially-connected A/D converter.

A communications package 25 is provided, e.g. for use with the IBM IMS transaction manager 17 and DB2 database manager 19. The communications package appears to the IMS transaction manager to be an associated resource manager, and it participates in 2-phase commit procedures involving both the IMS transaction manager and the DB2 database manager. The communications package receives copies of update statements applied to the DB2 database manager, and transmits them off-site before the updates are committed to the database. The communications package 25 may be used in a contingency arrangement in which a second IMS transaction manager 49 and a second DB2 database manager 51 maintain copies at a back-up site 13 of the databases at the main site 11. The update statements are transmitted by the communications package 25 to a tracking program 29, which logs them in a log 37. The logged update statements are used by an apply program 45 to update the copy databases.

A control system for a turbomachine such as a steam turbine includes an integrated control and display system (32,34) with means for automatically reconfiguring itself for each phase of operation. In each phase, only those displays and controls (60,62,64,66) required during that phase are provided; all other controls and displays are omitted. In one embodiment, inputs from the turbomachine pass through a decision tree for uniquely determining the phase of operation. The output of the decision tree selects and display and control parameters from a screen library. The screen library controls and positions of indicia and indicators on the displays and controls. The indicated values are determined from measured parameters. In one embodiment, a touch screen is employed for executing controls. The X and Y values of touch-sensitive parts of the screen are interpreted in terms of the intended control functions for the particular existing phase of operation.

A parallel EXCLUSIVE OR and EXCLUSIVE NOR gate comprises four groups of three transistors. In each group of transistors, one (60,62,66,70) is part of the EXCLUSIVE NOR gate only, one (74,76,78,80) is part of the EXCLUSIVE OR gate only, and one (56,58,64,68) is a part of both gates. The gates may be constructed in a manner similar to a known circuit using tri-inverters, but since one transistor in every group of three has a dual membership of both gates, the total circuit requires 12 transistors instead of 16.
