Date Nov. 24, 1994A heating control apparatus for use in a heating system having heaters for heating at least one location and temperature sensors for measuring the temperature of each location is disclosed. The heating system is connected to an electricity supply having a tariff which varies with time. The heating control apparatus comprises a data receiving arrangement for receiving data on the tariff and weather prediction information. A selector is provided which is operable by a user to select the desired temperature for each location and a desired time and duration of the desired temperature. A controller includes a memory for storing information on the thermal characteristics of each location and the heaters and is responsive to the data, the measured temperature and the temperature selected by the user as well as the stored information to determine the times at which the heaters are to be energised. The controller then controls the heaters in order to achieve the desired temperature in each location.

摘要： An electric induction motor can be given a kick start without excessive current drain on the supply by first connecting a unidirectional supply to a winding of the motor to build up a stationary rotor flux and then applying a starting current to another winding of the motor to produce a stator flux at an appropriate angle (between 0° and 180°) with the stationary rotor flux. Once the motor has begun accelerating the normal running supply can be connected. This starting current may be derived from a capacitance which is charged up during the period of establishing the stationary rotor flux.

摘要： Seals for rotary shafts (6) are provided where a seal is required between a rotating shaft (6) and a boundary separating two fluids (A, B), and where the fluids (A, B) are under continuous or fluctuating pressures. A differential fluid pressure across the boundary can result in leakage of fluid from one side of the boundary to the other, contaminating the fluid at a lower pressure. The seal comprises a chamber (1) having opposed apertures (4, 5) to receive a shaft (6) extending through the chamber (1). Means are provided to maintain fluid (C) in the chamber (1) at a controlled pressure. The apertures (4, 5) are arranged to provide limited leakage if any, of fluid (A, B, C) through the appertures (4, 5). By providing fluid (C) in the chamber (1) at a controlled pressure, leakage into the chamber (1) of fluid (A) from one or other side of the seal is prevented from contaminating fluid (B) on the opposite side of the seal.

摘要： There is described an apparatus for mixing solid particulates in a molten metal matrix to form a metal matrix composite, the apparatus comprising a refractory vessel (10) for containing the metal matrix in a molten state and defining an inlet (16) and an outlet (18); refractory conduit means (12) in communication with both the inlet (16) and the outlet (18) so as to define with the vessel (10) a closed loop flow path, the inlet (16) and outlet (18) being so spaced as to encourage mixing within the vessel (10); and pump means (20) disposed within the flow path and operative to circulate the metal matrix and particulates around the closed loop path so as to effect a mixing thereof. There is also described a method for mixing solid particulates in a molten metal matrix to form a metal matrix composite, the method comprising the steps of providing a refractory vessel (10) in communication with refractory conduit means (12) such that the vessel (10) and the conduit means (12) define a closed loop flow path; providing a molten metal matrix and particulates within the closed loop path; and circulating the metal matrix and particulates around the closed loop path so as to effect a mixing thereof.
