    摘要: A power transmission line, apparatus for and method of control thereof are provided to enable loads connected between the live and neutral conductors to be reconnected to a power supply following the occurrence of a short circuit upon the line, without the need to first repair the short circuited section of the line. The power line comprises a plurality of locations (8), each comprising a Signalling Power Management System (SPMS) unit (10) and a location transformer (12). The SPMS unit (10) comprises an impedance (18), which impedance and the location transformer (12) form a potential divider across the power supply. By comparing the voltages across the impedance (18) and the location transformer (12), a controller (28) determines whether there is a short circuit on the section of the power line downstream from the location transformer (12) as far as the next SPMS unit. Only if there is no short circuit upon this section does the controller (28) close a relay (26) in parallel with the impedance (18) such that all of the power supply voltage is dropped across the location transformer (12).

The rotor comprises a hub having a central axis, a plurality of rotor segments and permanent magnets, and an assembly for retaining the segments on the hub. The segments are arranged around the hub to define at least two rings, which are adjacent to each other in the axial direction with a permanent magnet disposed between each of the segments in each ring. The assembly includes a plurality of rods which extend in an axial direction to retain the rotor segments. An intermediate plate is located between each ring of segments through which the rods pass, wherein the intermediate plates and the outer circumferential surface of the hub engage with each other in such a way as to allow the intermediate plates to move axially along the hub.

    摘要: A compact arrangement which enables rotation of a component (4) of an apparatus to be sensed is provided. A component adapted for use in such an arrangement comprises a body having an axis of rotation (6) and a plurality of discrete magnetised regions (8) thereon, each formed in a layer of material (12) on the surface of the body, the magnetised regions being circumferentially distributed at substantially the same axial position to enable rotation of the component relative to a sensor (20, 20') to be monitored. Methods for manufacturing a suitable component are also described. The arrangement disclosed enables the rotational position of component, such as a shaft for example, to be sensed using a Hall effect sensor, and a component may be modified in accordance with the invention without substantially increasing its volume.
