A fuel filter assembly for the filtering of a flow of fuel includes an outer shell (21) defining a hollow interior (38) and, at a first end, a fuel inlet passageway (39), a fuel outlet passageway (40), and a water collection region (35). The outer shell has a second end which is open and constructed and arranged to be closed by a removable lid (22). Installed within the hollow interior of the outer shell is a fuel filter cartridge (23) which includes a filter element constructed and arranged for water separation. The filter element defines an interior space into which a fuel transfer pump (42) in installed and which is operable to push fuel through the filter element. Included as part of the fuel filter assembly is a filter detector control circuit including a normally-open filter detector switch (77) which is electrically and operably coupled to the fuel transfer pump. A plunger (78) on the filter detector switch must be depressed in order to close the circuit and enable operation of the fuel transfer pump. The plunger is depressed only upon the installation of the fuel filter cartridge, thereby preventing the delivery of fuel to a downstream location unless a fuel filter cartridge is properly installed. Also included as part of the fuel filter assembly is a fuel heater (30), a temperature sensor (33), a drain valve (32) and a diagnostic port (34).

The loop has a hollow interior extending along an axis. Fluid to be filtered flows through the main filter element from an upstream dirty side to a downstream clean side, and flows axially in the hollow interior. The main filter element has an axial flow passage extending along the axis and circumscribing the hollow interior and has a flow perimeter greater than the inner perimeter. A safety filter element downstream of the main filter element filters both the axial flow in the hollow interior and additional flow between the flow perimeter and the inner perimeter. A centrifuge assembly (20) for processing a flow of oil so as to separate out particulate matter includes a centrifuge (20b), a housing base (10), and a flow-control piston (32) which is assembled into the housing base (10). The centrifuge (206) includes a housing which defines a hollow interior with a centrifugal separator positioned within the hollow interior for separation of particulate matter from the flow of oil. The housing base (10) defines an incoming oil conduit (23), a drain conduit (24), an air-in passageway (25), and air-out passageway (26). The flow-control piston (32) is movable between a normally-closed piston and an open position in respect to incoming oil pressure. When in the closed position, neither oil nor air are able to flow into the centrifuge assembly (20). In the open position, both oil and air are able to flow into the centrifuge assembly (20). The air which is introduced is under pressure and provides air-assisted drainage of the oil from the centrifuge (20b) housing back to sump.
