    摘要: In the field of, e.g., mail processing apparatus, it is known to provide encoding marks on settable members such as thumbwheels for setting the date to be printed on envelopes. The encoding marks in known apparatuses are detectable by retro reflective sensors to determine the setting of the settable members. Previous such apparatuses are disadvantageous because it is necessary to provide a sensor circuit and a set of encoding marks for each thumbwheel, etc. Thus, the arrangement is complicated and the processing of the resulting signals time consuming. The disclosure relates to a settable apparatus for use in a mail processing apparatus, in which at least one settable member (10) includes encoding marks such as digits marked thereon. A charge coupled device (17) is arranged to detect the encoding mark of one or more settable members simultaneously. A lens (18) is disposed between the settable member and the charge coupled device to focus the image of the encoding marks onto the surface of the charge coupled device. Thus, the settings of a number of settable members such as thumbwheels may be determined simultaneously. An optional feature of the invention is a shutter which may be closed across the charge coupled device to protect it from damage, dust contamination etc.

    摘要: An envelope sealing and feeding device has upper and lower interfitting parts (10, 20) defining a reservoir for a liquid to be used in the sealing operation and a substantially horizontal slot through which an envelope (A) to be sealed can be fed. These parts co-operate with a wetter assembly (30) which includes a wetter blade (38B) extending across the slot and a tubular structure (36) containing wicking material (38D) and extending substantially vertically downwardly through the upper part (10) and into the liquid reservoir.
    With this arrangement, replacement of the wetter assembly (30) is made easier. Assembly and dis-assembly of the relevant parts of the machine in order to obtain access to the interior of the liquid reservoir can be done without difficulty. The upper and lower parts (10, 20) can be joined together readily merely by using two bolts or screws (22A), and once joined the wetter assembly (30) can be added easily due to the simple structure, which allows easy preparation of the sub-assembly consisting of parts 34, 38 and 39 and then straightforward insertion of a tubular structure (36) thereof in a slot (15) in the upper part (10). In addition, attachment of the envelope sealer-feeder device onto a postage meter is made particularly easy by the use of a bracket (26).
