The present invention is directed to a process for coating a surface of a substrate with a powder coating composition and forming a smooth film thereon; wherein the process comprises: applying a powder coating composition to a surface of a substrate; melting and curing the powder coating composition, wherein pulsed NIR radiation is used to perform said melting and curing of the powder coating composition, the NIR radiation being provided by an NIR radiation emitter and the pulsed NIR radiation comprising the steps of: a) applying heat by NIR radiation at 20-50 % NIR radiation emitter power to the surface of the substrate coated with the powder coating composition for a sufficient time to at least partially adhere the powder coating to the surface of the substrate; and then b) removing the heat for a period of time to allow the powder coating to at least partially coalesce and adhere to the surface of the substrate; and then c) applying said heat by NIR radiation at 80-100 % NIR radiation emitter power to the surface of the substrate to form a smooth cured film thereon.

By adding spheroidal particles to the powder coating composition further reduction in gloss can be obtained while improving smoothness. These compositions are well suited to produce coatings on metallic substrates, such as automotive bodies and non-metallic substrates, such as reconstituted wood substrates, used for desk or table tops.

The present invention provides an epoxy powder coating composition comprising an intimate mixture comprising (A) 5 to 99 wt % of at least one bromine functionalized epoxy resin with a bromine content of 5 to 60 % based on component (A), (B) 0.5 to 40 wt % of at least one epoxy curing agent, and (C) 0.01 to 55 wt % of at least one pigment, filler and/or coating additive, the wt % based on the total weight of the powder coating composition. The powder coating composition of this invention provides coating with a high glass transition temperature and acceptable flexibility when coated on metallic or plastic substrates, particularly metallic and plastics pipelines. The coatings may have an improved adhesion under hot and humid conditions as well as an optimum short and long term high temperature and humidity cathodic disbondment protection.
