A process is proposed for producing a video data stream destined for transmission over a data channel such as a radio telephone channel. The images are divided into a number of macro blocks and the video data is also divided into classes based on data type. The video data from at least some of the classes are incorporated in the stream in macro blocks. By contrast with the proposed standard H.263, video data of fixed length, in particular the DQUANT- and INTRADC values, are combined by macro block in a class intended for that purpose (ADMIN + DC-INTRA) and incorporated sequentially into the stream, without transmitting variable-length video data between them. Also proposed is a process for evaluating a video data stream: a first set of coded macro blocks is decoded starting from the video data bits transmitted first and a second set of coded macro blocks is decoded starting from the bits of the class transmitted last.
