摘要: The present invention measures agglutination using a process which is capable of testing how tightly agglutinated cells are bonded by measuring how much force is required to separate them. By causing red cells which are approximately biconcave discs to sphere, the effective surface area available for bonding diminishes. Sphering a cell increases the space between antigen binding sites and increases the mean distance across which bonding occurs. As the surface area available for bonding between cells decreases as cells sphere they lose bonding strength, thus allowing clumped cells to separate. By recording the inducing pressure and the number of cells (or quantities related to it) as they change with respect to the inducing pressure, agglutination can be detected, quantified and monitored. This provides a simple but effective test for blood grouping and cross-matching by introducing an appropriate source of antibodies and detecting whether or not agglutination occurs.

摘要: A fluid delivery apparatus comprising two or more delivery syringes (17), each delivery syringe comprising a syringe housing (18) defining a tube with a passage having a fluid outlet, and a syringe plunger arranged to slide axially within the tubular passage and seal one end of the tubular passage. The apparatus also includes a syringe plunger drive arranged to drive the syringe plunger along at least part of the length of the tubular passage according to a predetermined velocity profile or the delivery syringe and discharge fluid through the fluid outlet. The predetermined velocity profile of each delivery syringe is such that, in use, a combined flow rate fluid discharge simultaneously from the outlets from the delivery syringes is maintained substantially constant over at least a quarter of the range of movement of each of the plungers. In a preferred example, the syringe plunger drive comprises a rotatable cam (2) and a cam follower (14), being coupled to the syringe plunger to drive the syringe plunger as the cam is rotated.

摘要: According to the present invention, there is provided a method of analysing a sample of free cells in vitro comprising the steps of: applying a known or identifiable quantity of stress to the sample; measuring the sample before and after the application of stress to provide at least one reading from which quantitative information relating to the number of cell fragments in the sample caused by the applied stress can be determined; and, relating this reading to the quantity of stress to provide an indication of cell friability.

摘要: In a method of generating a clock signal having a desired frequency, a pulse is generated each time a stored accumulator value ( tank ) is found to be greater than or equal to a stored ( trigger ) value. In a first loop (10), the stored accumulator value ( tank ) is iteratively incremented by a first iterative value ( r ) until the stored accumulator value is greater than or equal to the stored trigger value and subsequently in a second loop (11) the stored accumulator value ( tank ) is decremented by a second iterative value until the stored accumulator value is less than the stored trigger value. During each iteration of the first loop (10), a current frequency of the clock signal is compared to a desired frequency value and if the two values are different, the first iterative value ( r ) is corrected at a predetermined rate ( accRate ) over one of more subsequent iterations until the frequency of the generator clock signal corresponds to the detected value of the desired frequency. In a preferred example, the number of iterations needed to change the first iterative value ( r ) is determined by a stored accumulator value which is added to an accelerator-accumulator ( AccTank ) for each iteration that the first iterative value and the desired frequency are not exactly equal.

摘要: An electrode assembly (1) for resistive pulse spectroscopy comprises two flat electrodes (3) substantially equal in size and shape and supported in face-to-face, parallel relationship ot one another, and a plate-like fluid-tight insulator (2) positioned between the electrodes and extended beyond the periphery of the electrodes with the electrodes (3) being fixed to the insulator (2). Each electrode has a hole (4) extending through the electrode in a central region thereof (4), the holes (4) of the two electrodes (3) being aligned with one another. The insulator (2) has a cavity (5) which receives an initially separate element (40) having a preformed aperture (16) therein which is located substantially centrally with respect to the holes (4) in the electrodes (3) and has a smaller diameter than the said holes, the aperture (16) being located such as to allow a flow of liquid to pass therethrough and through the holes in the electrode.
