Transmit power control methods and apparatus are disclosed. In several embodiments, a mobile terminal (200) is configured to effectively ignore "UP" transmit power control commands in the event that the mobile terminal (200) is operating in a power-limited state. In an exemplary method for controlling transmit power at a mobile terminal (200), a plurality of transmit power control commands are received. An accumulated power control value is adjusted (350) in response to each transmit power control command that directs a negative adjustment in transmit power. However, the accumulated power control value is adjusted (350) in response to a transmit power control command that directs a positive adjustment in transmit power only if the mobile terminal (200) is not in a power-limited state. Transmit power settings for each transmission are calculated (360) based on the accumulated power control value and the one or more radio link parameters.

Variable bandwidth assignment and frequency hopping are employed to make efficient use of radio resources. Variable bandwidth assignment is achieved by dynamically allocating different numbers of subcarriers to different mobile terminals depending on their instantaneous channel conditions. The frequency hopping patterns are determined "on-the-fly" based on the current bandwidth assignments. The bandwidth assignments and frequency hopping patterns are signaled to the mobile terminals in a scheduling grant.

A method of scheduling wireless data transmissions between a mobile terminal (701) and a base station using multiple component carrier signals is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: receiving in the mobile terminal information from the base station indicating available component carriers; detecting in the mobile terminal at least one dynamic parameter indicative of the mobile terminal's current ability to handle component carriers having non-contiguous bandwidths; determining in the mobile terminal in dependence of the at least one dynamic parameter which of the available component carriers to utilize; and transmitting from the mobile terminal to the base station information indicating the component carriers determined to utilize. By doing this the mobile terminal may choose to limit the number of component carriers used in situations where it is disadvantageous, such as situations where the power consumption of supporting multiple component carriers is high or situations where complex hardware is needed.
