On obtient un diamant poli sans rayures en frottant une surface du diamant à polir contre une surface de diamant complémentaire lisse avec une pression et une vitesse suffisantes pour chauffer la surface à polir au dessus de la température de dégradation thermique spontanée du diamant. Un tel procédé permet de brunir des paliers diamant sur diamant en dix minutes seulement comparées aux trois semaines nécessaires avec les techniques antérieures de polissage. On évite une détérioration thermique excessive du diamant en refroidissant de préférence de manière intermittente la surface en cours de polissage. Les mêmes techniques peuvent être utilisées pour d'autres matériaux extrêmement durs tels que du nitrure de bore à structure cubique.

A composite material is described which includes a mixture of individual diamond crystals and pieces of precemented carbide. The mixture is heated and pressurized to create intercrystalline bonds between the diamond crystals and chemical bonds between the diamond crystals and the precemented carbide pieces. The resulting composite polycrystalline diamond body exhibits excellent wear characteristics and impact resistance.
