Apparatus and method for coating a continuous web, such as paper or transparent film of cellulose acetate or polyethylene terephthalate, with liquid materials, such as photographic layer materials, which require chilling before they are dried, are described. Immediately before they are dried, are described. Immediately before the chilling zone, the web with liquid materials thereon passes through isolation means which displaces higher dew point air travelling with the web with air having a dew point below the temperature of the atmosphere in the upstream end of the chilling zone. The displacement is achieved by directing several flows of low dew point air at the web. The flows are extensive transversely of the web and are spaced apart longitudinally of the web. Air may flow away from the web between the flows towards the web. By ensuring that the dew point of the air travelling with the web into the chilling zone is below the temperature in the upstream end of the chilling zone, condensation is avoided. Further, it becomes possible to operate at least the upstream end of the chilling zone at lower temperatures than previously. The flows of air onto the liquid coating are of such low velocity that the uniformity of thickness of the coating is not disturbed.

Method and apparatus for continuously and uniformly coating both sides of a substrate (2) which is to be coated with a coating such as a photosensitive material of the like (hereinafter referred to as the 'substrate'), while supporting the surface opposite to the surface of the substrate (2) being coated without contact by injecting a gas from a gas injector (3') during the step of coating the surfaces with a coating liquid by coaters (1) and (1'). In this apparatus, the supporting static pressure generated in the gap between the substrate (2) and the injector (3') becomes 1/10 to 1/1,000 of the supplied gas pressure fed to the injector (3'), and the liquid is coated so that the amount by which the substrate (2) floats in the region where the liquid from the coaters is in contact with the substrate (2) is made to be 20 to 500 µm by controlling the supplied pressure, the pressure loss in the injector, and the tension applied to the substrate. In this manner, variations in the floating distance (floating amount) of the substrate (2) can be suppressed to an allowable range, thereby eliminating lateral steps of irregular coating, and obtaining a uniformly thick coating layer.

A method of electronic processing of a latent image from a photographic element, the method employing pulsed radiation and radio frequency photoconductivity apparatus having a sample capacitor with a gap, including the steps of: placing the element in an electromagnetic field adjacent the sample capacitor; providing an advance mechanism for advancing the photographic element past the capacitor; scanning the element through the gap in the sample capacitor with a pulsed, focused beam of radiation; directly measuring the photoelectron response of the element and recording the resulting signals from the radio frequency photoconductivity apparatus; and advancing the element and repeating the exposing and measuring steps to provide a two dimensional readout of the latent image on the photographic element at ambient temperature or below.

Appareil et procédé de revêtement d'une bande continue, tel que du papier ou un film transparent d'acétate de cellulose ou de téréphtalate de polyéthylène, utilisant des matières liquides, telles que des matières de couches photographiques qui exigent un refroidissement brusque avant d'être séchées. Immédiatement avant la zone de refroidissement, la bande portant les matières liquides traverse l'élément d'isolation qui déplace, à un point de condensation plus élevé, de l'air avec la bande, cet air présentant un point de condensation inférieur à la température ambiante à l'extrémité avale de la zone de refroidissement. Le déplacement se fait en dirigeant plusieurs écoulements d'air à faible point de condensation sur la bande. Les écoulements passent dans le sens transversal de la bande et s'écartent dans le sens longitudianl de la bande. De l'air peut s'éloigner de la bande en passant entre les écoulements dirigés vers la bande. En s'assurant que le point de condensaiton de l'air se déplaçant avec la bande dans la zone de refroidissement est inférieur à la température de l'extrémité avale de la zone de refroidissement, on évite la condensation. En outre, il est possible d'utiliser au moins à l'extrémité avale de la zone de refroidissement des températures inférieures aux précédentes. Les écoulements d'air sur le revêtement liquide ont une vitesse si faible que la régularité de l'épaisseur du revêtement n'est pas affectée.
