A first piston ring is disposed in the uppermost ring groove and a second piston ring is disposed in the lower ring groove. The body has an annular sealed cooling gallery with a cooling medium contained therein. The sealed cooling gallery is configured in substantial radial alignment between the first and second piston rings to provide optimal cooling to the ring belt region, top land and upper combustion surface.

The aim of the invention is to obtain, with constant or increasing output, a reduction in the compression height of a cooling duct piston (1) for a direct-injection diesel engine. To this end, the piston (1) is composed of at least two parts (23) that are soldered together. One of the parts is a piston base body (2), which is forged of steel and which is provided with a shaft (8), hubs (6) and with an annular part (9). The other part, which is made of steel or of a nickel-based material, contains a combustion recess (4) and at least a portion of the piston head (5). Um in diesen Bauteilen den Spannungsverlauf über der Temperatur in thermisch hochbeaufschlagten Teilen oder Bereichen dadurch günstiger zu gestalten, daß die angrenzenden kälteren Bereiche ihre Ausdehnung nicht reduzieren oder verhindern, ist im Werkstoff des Bauteils, beispielsweise eines Kolbens einer Verbrennungskraftmaschine, benachbart zu den Zonen hoher Wärmebeaufschlagung, mindestens ein abgeschlossener Hohlraum (3, 4) vorgesehen, der vollständig mit einem Material ausgefüllt ist, das einen höheren Wärmeausdehnungskoeffizienten hat als der ihn umschließende Werkstoff des Bauteils.
