There is provided a circuit for applying a positive voltage to each of the heaters during the above-described interval to reduce a potential difference between the heater and corresponding one of the cathodes to thereby lower a leakage current flowing between the cathode and the heater.

A multi-beam electron gun (60) for a color cathode ray tube (CRT) includes a plurality of vertically spaced, horizontal inline beams, where each inline array of beams provides the three primary colors and adjacent inline beam arrays simultaneously trace adjacent horizontal scan lines (72a, 72b), where each inline array of beams provides three primary colors and adjacent inline beam arrays simultaneously trace adjacent horizontal scan lines (83a, 83b) on the color CRT's display screen (61). Each inline array of beams is modulated in accordance with that portion of the video image which they form allowing adjacent, vertically spaced inline arrays to write different video image information on the screen in simultaneously forming adjacent portions of the color video image. Simultaneously providing color video image information on more than one horizontal scan line allows for a reduction in horizontal scan frequency and associated magnetic deflection yoke operating criteria, and also increases beam dwell time on the screen's phosphor elements allowing for a reduction in individual beam current without sacrificing video image brightness while improving video image resolution.

Multibeam cathode ray tube apparatus incorporates control circuits for maintaining the relative intensity of the beams over a range of settings of the brightness control. As applied to a three beam colour tube, at least two, and preferably all three, of the electron guns have each a control circuit located between the control grid (V g1 ) and a variable voltage source (V) which constitutes the brightness control of the display. A potentiometer (R,) allows the voltage (V) to be variably attenuated and a second potentiometer (R 2 ) acting in conjunction with a current source (1) allows the attenuated voltage to have a variable voltage added thereto. The potentiometers (R, and R 2 ) for each electron gun are adjusted to bring the brightness versus control voltage characteristic for each gun into coincidence. The current source (I) may be constituted by a fixed resistor and a fixed voltage. The invention is also applicable to multibeam monochrome tubes.

Information about the position of an electron beam in a shadow mask colour cathode-ray tube is obtained by detecting a signal representative of the electron beam current intercepted by the shadow mask. The signal may be derived by detecting the current generated by the electron beam in the shadow mask, or in the conductive layer at the tube screen, or by detecting the difference between the electron beam currents in the mask and at the screen. In the latter case, the shadow mask 2 and the conductive layer 3 are connected respectively to the ends of the primary winding 6 of a transformer. The difference currents are detected by a secondary winding 9. A centre tap 8 of the primary winding is connected to the tube EHT. EHT isolation may also be achieved by optical or capacitive decoupling. The shadow mask may have shaped apertures to generate distinctive difference currents. In a preferred embodiment the apertures are slits or rows of slots extending from one side to the other of the shadow mask and a line raster is such that each line coincides with a different slit.

Video signals for each primary color are delayed in time relative to every other primary color video signals. When displayed on a cathode ray tube ("CRT") display, the time delayed video signals will result in a separated color pattern for each image displayed. Separated color images are subsequently realigned through use of electron beam deflection controls affecting the horizontal and vertical displacement of electron beams for each color. Measurement of EMI at a far field point varies between zero (no EMI) and no reduction in measurable EMI, depending on the frequency of the video signals and the amount of time delay induced therein. In alternative embodiments, time shifting of video signals may be accomplished either by discrete filter components, simple propagation delay lines.
