摘要: A coupler for joining polymeric pipes comprises a generally cylindrical radially heat-shrinkable member (1) which is composed of a conductive polymer. To recover the coupler, current is passed axially through the coupler via electrodes (2,3). The coupler has a center portion (11) of increased wall thickness and in this way, when there is a gap between the pipes, overheating of the center portion of the coupler is avoided.

摘要: A connector for optically connecting first and second optical fiber contacts terminating first and second optical fibers includes a split ring comprising first and second split ring halves disposed around each of the contacts such that an enlarged internal bore of the split ring encloses a flange of the contact so as to allow limited relative longitudinal movement between the contact and the split ring. The split ring allows a nut to be disposed over an end of the contact prior to assembling the split ring about the contact which allows the construction to be reduced in size.

摘要: The invention provides a high voltage capacitor suitable for measuring the voltage of an overhead power line. The capacitor dielectric (16B) is mounted directly on to the power line conductor (2), which serves as one electrode of the capacitor. The other electrode (18) of the capacitor is mounted on to the outer surface of the dielectric (16B), and is protected at each side by a guard ring (20). Stress control (22, 24) is provided between the outer capacitor electrode (18) and the guard rings (20) and also at the outer edges of the guard rings (20). The capacitor may be enclosed in an earthed housing (30). which can contain one or more current transformers (34, 36, 38). The apparatus can be used for fault detection and location, and may be used in combination with a power cable or a switch.

摘要: A self-regulated actuator is disclosed having a shape-memory element which is heated preferably by passing electrical current therethrough and having a reset mechanism including a circuit-breaking mechanism. The shape memory element provides the force to retract the actuator when heated. The reset mechanism utilizes a spring-biased latch plunger that resets the actuator as soon as it has retracted a specific distance. The reset mechanism also acts as a circuit breaking mechanism to electrically interrupt current heating the shape-memory element. The reset mechanism provides near instant reset time and overcomes the longer wait period otherwise associated with the natural cooling of the shape memory element. The reset mechanism prevents overheating of the shape-memory element and precludes the necessity for additional hardware to interrupt the circuit after actuation is completed. Also discussed is a self-protection means that protects the shape-memory element from deliberate and accidental overloads and to accommodate the extra motion required for high-cycle design life.
