An apparatus and method of forming a coated paper applicator (10) is disclosed for inserting a substance into a body cavity along with the applicator itself. An apparatus for coating paper and a method of forming paper into an applicator are also disclosed. The applicator is especially useful for inserting a catamenial tampon into a woman's vagina. The applicator includes a tubular member (22) formed from at least one layer of paper and has an interior and an exterior surface. The tubular member is capable of holding the substance which is to be inserted. At least one of the surfaces of the tubular member is coated with a water-insoluble coating which is comprised of from between about 95 to about 98 percent by weight of a polymeric material and from between about 2 to about 5 percent by weight of a slip agent. The coating provides the tubular member with a dry coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.35 to about 0.56 and a wet coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.78 to about 1.06. These low dry and wet coefficient of kinetic friction values facilitate insertion of the applicator into the body cavity and expulsion of the substance from the applicator.

The two components enter into the material as premade composite fibres formed by both components, in the form of a web (2) of rovings. The polymer is a thermoplastic polymer, for example polypropylene, and the pole is made of the composite fibres under heat stress which softens the polymer and thereby joins the composite fibres so that they, after cooling, assume fixed shape. In this way, for example a flagpole which is less expensive than a conventional flagpole of for example glass-fibre reinforced polyester and which, at the same time, has just as good properties, can be manufactured.

Dabei werden eine äussere Oberfläche (15) der Hülse durch einen Mantel (51) des Aufnehmers und eine innere Oberfläche (14) durch einen Kern (41) geformt. Der Wickelkörper (2) wird auf den Kern (41) aufgebracht und es werden der Kern sowie der Wickelkörper auf eine Temperatur über der Verarbeitungstemperatur des Verbundwerkstoffs (3') erhitzt, während der Mantel (51) auf eine unter dem Erstarrungs- oder Glaspunkt des Thermoplasts liegende Temperatur erwärmt wird. Beim anschliessenden Kompaktifizieren wird keine weitere Wärme dem Kern sowie dem Wickelkörper zugeführt.

A hollow fiber membrane module and its method of manufacture are disclosed wherein the module is fabricated utilizing superior hollow fiber materials, namely high molecular weight (i.e. molecular weight > 500,000 Daltons) polymers. In a preferred embodiment, the hollow fibers are fabricated from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UPE). An array of UPE hollow fiber membranes is contacted with an extrusion of molten thermoplastic polymer at a contact temperature which is higher than the UPE membrane polymer. This high temperature application of sealing polymer does not collapse or otherwise deform the lumen of the hollow fiber, while assuring that the polymer can thus be applied with sufficiently low viscosity to provide adequate penetration around the individual fibers of the array to form an integral seal thereabout.

Durch die höhere Dichte im Zentrum der Dichtung wird die Flächenpressung beim Schließen der Dichtung erhöht und das Querfließverhalten reduziert. Hergestellt wird die Dichtung durch das Umstülpen und Aufrollen eines auf einen Dorn spiralig aufgewickelten Bandes, welches nach dem Aufrollen einer Wärmebehandlung unterworfen wird, die zu einem Schrumpfen und damit zu einer Spannungskonzentration im Material führt.
