A 3- (3-hexenyl)-2-cyclopentenone represented by a general formula (1) (wherein wavy line represents a double bond cis-form and/or trans-form) is used as an active ingredient of scent and mixed in a small amount with fragrance compositions, cis-jasmone and/or various materials to be scented. Since the above compound has a characteristic fragrance quality and high palatability, it is markedly useful as a scenting component of various fragrances and cosmetics, sanitation materials and the like.

Industrially advantageous processes for producing a 2-alkyl-2-cyclopentenone in high yields starting from a 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)cyclopentanone or a 2-alkylidenecyclopentanone, which are obtainable from a cyclopentanone and a carbonyl compound. A 2-(1-hydroxyalkyl)cyclopentanone represented by the following general formula (1): is subjected to dehydrative isomerization or a 2- alkylidenecyclopentanone represented by the following general formula (3): is isomerized. Both reactions take place in the presence of a bromine compound and/or an iodine compound. In the above formulae, R 1 -R 7 have the meanings given in the description.

A process for the preparation of carvone comprises hydrogenating carvoxime in the presence of a selectively poisoned catalyst. Preferred catalysts include noble metals supported on inorganic materials poisoned with a catalyst modifier. In a preferred embodiment of the process defined herein, the crude carvone reaction product produced in accordance with the process of the invention, is purified by treating the crude carvone product with an organometallic compound M(X)n wherein M is a polyvalent metal, n is the valence of M and X denotes an inorganic or organic atom or group.

The invention relates to carbonyl compounds of the general structure (I) where the rest R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group with between 1 and 5 carbon atoms, the rests R?2 and R3¿ independently of each other are hydrogen or an alkyl group with between 1 and 3 carbon atoms and one of the positions C-1/C-2, C-2/C-3 or C-1/C-6 has a C=C double bond, and the rest R4 is either hydrogen or, if the C=C double bond is situated in position C-2/C-3, hydrogen or an alkyl group with between 1 and 3 carbon atoms. The above compounds are characterized by interesting fragrance notes of great intensity and are suitable for use as fragrances in, for example, cosmetic preparations, technical products or perfumed spirits.

The invention concerns cycloaliphatic ketones of formula (I) which have two conjugated double bonds in positions 1 and 3, or 2 and 4, as shown by the dashed lines, and in which formula R defines a C1-C3 alkyl radical. The cycloaliphatic ketones are used as intermediate products in the preparation of jasmonic derivatives and are obtained by an addition reaction between cyclopentanone and an aldehyde of formula (II) of which the double bond has the configuration (E) and in which R has the meaning given above, to provide a dienic cyclopentanone of formula (Ia) E,E. Le 4,4,5,8-tétraméthyl-1-oxaspiro[2.5]octane, composé oxiranique nouveau, est préparé à partir de la 2,2,3,6-tétraméthyl-1-cyclohexanone par méthylénation de celle-ci suivie de l'époxydation du 1,2,2,4-tétraméthyl-3-méthylène-cyclohexane obtenu. La réaction s'effectue à l'aide d'un réactif de Wittig ou avec le méthylure de diméthylsulfonium dans les conditions de la réaction dite de Corey-Chaykovsky. Le méthylure de diméthylsulfonium peut être obtenu par réaction du chlorure de triméthylsulfonium avec l'hydroxyde de sodium ou du diméthylsulfure et diméthylsulfate avec l'hydroxyde de sodium dans le diméthylsulfoxyde.
