According to the invention, the suction device is designed as a single-stage fan, the intake opening of which is oriented substantially in the direction of the arc furnace, and the open channel cross-section between the suction device and the scrap feed is adapted to the scrap amount to be supplied in such a way that the height of the scrap filling largely fills out the open cross-section.

The aim of the invention is to allow for the troublefree charging of a crucible with scrap metal with different composition, such as light scrap and heavy scrap, from a lower outlet opening of a shaft-type charging device (1) by means of a pusher (13). For this purpose, the lateral faces of the pusher (13) are configured so as to converge from top to bottom and the actuator (2) of the pusher (13) is mounted in a frame construction (3) so as to be pivotable about a horizontal axis. The upper limit of the outlet opening for the charging stock from the shaft (2) is configured by a horizontal, pivoted roller (26), which preferably comprises catch elements (30) that are distributed across the peripheral surface thereof. Sections of the charging device that are subject to high mechanical stresses are configured by steel billet sections that are linked to give a constructional unit.
