摘要:
A coin discrimination apparatus and method which is capable of repeatedly and accurately discriminating between coins of similar properties includes sensing with a test coin sensor the characteristics of a test coin and comparing the characteristics of the test coin with characteristics of a plurality of coin denominations. If the comparing results in a match between the characteristics of the test coin and the characteristics of one of the coin denominations then the test coin is declared to be the coin denomination that is matched. If the comparing results in matches between the characteristics of the test coin and the characteristics of more than one of the coin denominations, then the matches are compared to each other in order to determine which of the matches represents a valid match.

A universal device for identification of predetermined coins (M), transponders (T) and/or electronic credit storing means (O) includes a box-like case (1) featuring, on its outer surface, a first rectangular slot (11) for introduction of coins (M) and transponders (T), and a second rectangular slot (13) for ejection of coins (M) and transponders (T). The case (1) defines in its inside a sliding channel (15) and a discharge channel (151), which are situated in series and extend downwards from the first slot (11) to the second slot (13). The case (1) includes also a control unit (17) connected to sensor means (161) situated on lateral walls of the sliding channel (15) near the first slot (11) for detecting the introduction of the predetermined coins (M) or the identification code of the transponders (T). The control unit (17) is also connected to electronic data reading/writing sensor (171), which read the remaining credit in said transponders (T) and which are situated on the lateral walls of the sliding channel (15) downstream of the sensor means (161). The electronic data reading/writing sensor means (171) are controlled by the control unit (17) to read/write the credit value remaining in the electronic credit storing means (O), previously introduced in the first slot (11) until they have reached the area of the electronic data reading/writing sensor (171). The electronic credit storing means (O) can be withdrawn from the first slot (11) in step relation with an enabling signal received from the control unit (17).

A coin validation mechanism for evaluating coins and the like inserted therein and for validating acceptable coins includes a coin chute defining a coin path and a sensor for evaluating the type of material of which the object in the coin chute is made of. The sensor for evaluating includes a coil sensor positioned adjacent the coin path and a non-resonant electrical circuit for operation of the coil sensor. The coin validation mechanism also includes a light source for directing light across the coin path and a light sensor for sensing light directed across the coin path. An electronic unit is provided for evaluating an electromagnetic pertubation caused by an object moving past the coil sensor and for determining the amount of light blocked by the object in the coin path by comparing the amount of light sensed by the light sensor with the object in the coin with the amount of light sensed by the light sensor in the absence of an object in the coin path. The electronic unit further compares the amount of light blocked by the object in the coin path and the electromagnetic pertubation with known values for valid coins to evaluate whether the object in the coin path is a valid coin or not.

Coin validation can be advantageously improved by transforming measured data values associated with coin characteristics from a first geometric space to a second geometric space, in which the transformed values in the second geometric space are preferably better adapted for discrimination between different coin denominations than the corresponding values in the first geometric space. Preferably, principal component analysis is used to identify principal components that can be used as dimensions of the second geometric space, so that measured data values in the second geometric space are less correlated than in the first geometric space.

A coin discriminating apparatus includes a magnetic sensor for detecting magnetic properties of a coin being transported and producing magnetic data of the coin, an optical sensor for producing optical data of the coin, a reference optical data memory for storing reference optical data of an obverse surface and a reverse surface of coins of each denomination, a reference magnetic data memory for storing reference magnetic data of an obverse surface and a reverse surface of coins of each denomination to be discriminated, a first coin discriminator for comparing optical data of the coin produced by the optical sensor with reference optical data of an obverse surface and a reverse surface of coins of each denomination and determining whether or not the coin is acceptable and the denomination of the coin, and a second coin discriminator for reading from the reference magnetic data memory magnetic reference data selected depending upon whether reference optical data of the obverse surface of a coin of a certain denomination or those of the reverse surface of the coin of the denomination were used when the first coin discriminator determined the coin to be acceptable and the denomination of the coin based thereon and comparing them with the magnetic data produced by the magnetic sensor, thereby finally discriminating whether or not the coin is acceptable and the denomination of the coin. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to accurately discriminate a counterfeit coin even when optical data acquired from the counterfeit coin such as diameter data and surface pattern data thereof coincide with those of genuine coins of a certain denomination and when the magnetic data acquired from the counterfeit coin are similar to those of coins of the denomination.

A coin mechanism includes a piezoelectric film sensor in contact with a coin debounce device. When a coin is inserted into the coin mechanism, the coin strikes the coin debounce device as it travels along a coin path. Micro-movement of the coin debounce device is sensed with the piezoelectric film sensor. The coin mechanism changes from a quiescent mode of operation to an active mode of operation in response to sensing the presence of the coin in the coin path. Coin recognition can then be performed. Overall power consumption of the coin mechanism can be reduced.

A coin discriminating apparatus includes a light source for emitting light toward one surface of a coin being transported, a reflected light sensor for receiving light emitted from the light source and reflected by the coin, light emitting elements disposed downstream of the light source for emitting light toward the one surface of the coin being transported, a sensor for photoelectrically receiving light emitted from the light emitting elements and reflected by the one surface of the coin and producing image pattern data of the one surface of the coin, a memory for storing reference data of coins of each denomination, a first denomination discriminator for calculating coin diameter based on the image pattern data of the one surface of the coin produced by the sensor, comparing it with reference diameter data of coins of each denomination stored in the memory and tentatively determining the denomination of the coin, a second denomination discriminator for reading reference pattern data of coins of the denomination determined by the first denomination discriminator from the memory comparing the reference pattern data with the image pattern data of the one surface of the coin and finally determining the denomination of the coin, and a received light amount controller for controlling an amount of light reflected by the one surface of the coin to be detected by the sensor in accordance with an amount of light reflected by the coin and detected by the reflected light sensor. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to discriminate whether or not coins are acceptable and the denominations of coins with high accuracy by optically detecting the surface patterns of coins.
