User-viewable renderings of variable gray level images composed of pixels represented by binary coded codewords are written on a suitable recording medium by one or more pixel generators which have their write responses code matched to the codewords. More particularly, the write responses of the pixel generators (22 a -----) are "code matched" to the codewords by cyclically and bit synchronously stepping them through a series of gray-scale values which are selected to substantially match the binary weights of the respective bits of the codewords. Such code matched pixel generators are selectively write enabled and disabled in response to the logic levels of the successive bits of the codewords that are applied to them, whereby the binary weighted writes any of them performs in response to a given codeword spatially sum to form a pixel having approximately the same gray-scale value as the given codeword.

This technique for assembling a print head for an LED printer has LED dice (16) first assembled into precisely known locations on mounting tiles (13). A portion (19) of the front face of each tile (13) is left exposed beyond anything mounted on the tile (13). The tiles (13) are then assembled with these exposed areas (19) on a planar reference (32) on an assembly fixture (31). Reference surfaces (34,36) built into the fixture (31) align the edges of the tiles (13), and hence the LED dice (16). Finally a mother plate (10) is adhesively bonded onto the backs of the tiles (13). The adhesive accommodates thickness variations in the mounting tiles (13), and lack of flatness in the back surfaces of the tiles (13) and the front face of the mother plate (10). Reference tiles (41) coplanar with the reference plane formed by the front faces of the mounting tiles (13) provide a z axis reference.

A circuit is disclosed for correcting the write power of a laser raster output scanner as it scans across a write drum (15). During calibration, a piece of glass (25) reflects part of the beam into a photo-multiplier tube (16), the output of which is converted into a digital signal. This is compared with a reference signal. The difference for each segment of the scan is stored in RAM and also is converted back to an analog signal to modulate an acousto-optic modulator in the laser optics to correct the write power. After the system has settled to a point where the write power at the drum does not vary across the scan, the glass may be removed, and the system thereafter operates using the correction signals stored in RAM.

Die Bildpunkte werden durch Lichttore (35) hindurch auf einem Aufzeichnungsträger belichtet. Diese Lichttore (35) sind reihenweise angeordnet und durch Bildpunktelektroden (22,22') und Hauptelektroden (23,24,25,26) gebildet. Jeder Bildpunktelektrode (22, 22') sind n Lichttore (35, 19) zugeordnet, dabei sind jeder bildpunktelektrodenreihe (27, 28) n Hauptelektroden zugeordnet, so daß 2N-2 Lichttore durch N Elektroden gebildet werden. Die Elektrodenstruktur ist so aufgebaut, daß jeder Bildpunktelektrodenreihe (27,28) auf jeder Längsseite wenigstens eine Hauptelektrode zugeordnet ist. Jede Bildpunktelektrode 22 weist n Schaltbereiche (20, 21) auf, die auf unterschiedlichen Seiten der bildpunktelektroden angeordnet sind.
