The invention relates to a tolerance compensating device for rotating and tilting bolts. More particularly, the invention relates to a tolerance compensating device for non winding tongues, i.e. for tractive/rotating bolts or tilting bolts in locks which can be mounted in thin walls such as sheet-metal cabinets with a frame and a door. The lock comprises a housing which maintains a tractive/rotating bolt in an axially displaceable and rotational state, or a housing which accommodates a tilting bolt, wherein the bolt is provided with a bore (32, 132) in the vicinity of the free end thereof, wherein a rear engaging device is displaceably maintained perpendicular to the plane of rear engagement. According to the invention, the rear engagement device comprises a spring (33,133) which presses the rear engaging device (68,188) in the direction of the rear engaging surface (36) when the lock (10, 110) is in a closed position.
