A cylinder has a shell (2) that rotates around a fixed central axis (1). A first chamber (7) arranged inside the cylinder is filled with liquid and transfers a supporting hydraulic force from the central axis (1) to the shell (2). The first chamber (7) is linked by a throttle (11) to a second chamber (20) located as well inside the cylinder, and in which is arranged a hermetically closed rubber hose (21) filled with gas, so that the second chamber (20) is at all times only partially filled with liquid. Thus the volume of liquid contained in the second chamber (20) can rapidly change when there is a change of pressure in the first chamber (7), so that when the shell (2) tends to vibrate, liquid flows back and forth through the throttle (11), converting wave energy in frictional heat by means of fluid friction.

Preferablly, the inner surface (60) is roughened in accordance with published Moldtech Standard 1055-5. The belt (29) has a circular crozss-section and is formed of polyurethane. Moreover, the roughened surface (60) on the drive pulley (48) improves the traction between the belt (29) and the drive pulley (48) when the belt (29) is tightened in order to be driven by the drive pulley (48).

A scroll-type hermetic compressor is disclosed including a hermetically sealed housing (12), fixed and orbiting scroll members (48, 50), a stationary frame member (52) including a thrust surface (55) adjacent the orbiting scroll member bottom surface (51), and a crankshaft (32) drivingly coupled to the orbiting scroll member. A seal (158) extends from a fixed location on the orbiting scroll member bottom surface toward the thrust surface and slidingly seals thereagainst, whereby fixed radially inner and outer portions (154, 156) of the scroll member are defined which are exposed to discharge and suction pressures (110, 98) for axial compliance. The seal consists of an annular groove (152) on the orbiting scroll member bottom surface in which an annular seal element (158) is unattachedly retained. The groove may be supplied with pressurized oil to aid in sealing with the seal element or, alternatively, to provide a hydrostatic seal without a seal element.
