In a toothed belt (1) having canvas (5) pasted on a meshing surface of a belt body, warp threads (9), which extend in the lengthwise direction of the toothed belt (1), in the canvas (5) consist of complex threads (15) each of which is composed of an elastic core thread (16), a fiber thread (17) of a high strength and a high thermal resistance wound around the core thread, and a regular synthetic fiber thread (18) wound around the fiber thread (17). The fiber thread (17) of a high strength and a high thermal resistance is restricted by the synthetic fiber thread (18) wound around the outer side thereof, and the fiber thread (17) does not therefore project in a greatly looped state, so that the thickness of the canvas (5) decreases. This enables the canvas (5) to have a high abrasion resistance and a high durability.

A method of making a plurality of toothed belt constructions and a set of such belt constructions are provided, the method comprising the steps of disposing tubular sleeves (34) of stretchable fabric material (25-25B) respectively onto a plurality of toothed mold members (31-31B) having different diameters, forcing mold material (35-35B) against the outside surfaces (37) of the sleeves (34) to tend to stretch the fabric material (25-25B) into the grooves (33-33B) of the toothed mold members (31-31B) as the mold material enters the grooves of the mold members so that the resulting toothed belt constructions (20-20B) will have the fabric material (25-25B) thereof carried in certain positions relative to the respective teeth (23-23B) thereof, and forming the sleeves (34) from the same fabric material and with the same diameters in the nonstretched conditions thereof.

The back rubber and the toothed rubber are formed such that a rubber composition, which compounds partial hydrogenated nitrile rubber with iodine having a value of from 12 to 20, a sulfur-based crosslinking agent and a vulcanization accelerator, is cured and molded, wherein a vulcanization accelerator is compounded in a specified ratio of tellurium dithiocarbamate compound, zinc dithiocarbamate compound, tetramethylthiuram disulfide and tetraethylthiuram disulfide.

A synchronous belt of the present invention has a tension member (3) in the form of a cord, a plurality of teeth (2) fixedly provided on one side of the tension member at set intervals in a longitudinal direction of the belt and a back layer (1) bonded to the other side of the tension member. The back layer (1) and the teeth (2) are formed of urethane elastomer. The tension member (3) is formed of inorganic fibres and is impregnated with a water based latex adhesive. A film of an epoxy adhesive is formed on the surface of the tension member.

A toothed belt (10) includes a tensile body (12) embedded therewithin and the tooth surface thereof coated with a tooth sheet (18), wherein the tooth sheet (18) is treated by RFL solution including inorganic pigments. The toothed belt, after treatment by RFL solution, forms an RFL solution impregnated layer at the tooth surface thereof. Resorcin and formaldehyde are compounded in the mole ratio of 1:1 to 1:3, while resorcin and formaldehyde are compounded with latex in the weight ratio of 1:5 to 1:15. Solid content of RFL solution is compounded with inorganic pigments in the weight ratio of 20:1 to 1:2. The inorganic pigment is selected from those other than black colored series.

Anti-wear properties and tooth life in a toothed belt (10) are improved by taking advantage of heat hardening of a treating agent used to treat the tooth cloth (22). The tooth cloth (22) is treated with a resorcinol formaldehyde latex solution containing a mixture, at a weight ratio from 1:5 to 1:15, of a resorcinol formaldehyde solution containing resorcinol and formaldehyde at a molecular ratio from 1:1 to 1:3 and a latex solution containing carboxyl modified nitrile butadiene rubber and carboxyl modified hydrogenated nitrile rubber at a weight ratio from 4:6 to 1:9, and further containing carbon at a weight ratio of 1 to 10 %. The solid content adhering onto the tooth cloth is from 5 to 30 weight %.
