Embodiments of the present invention provide an apparatus for controlling the flow of aspiration fluid in an aspiration chamber (185,524,624) of a surgical cassette (150,522,600). One embodiment of the present invention provides an aspiration chamber having an aspiration port (632) positioned at or close to the bottom of the chamber. When the aspiration fluid enters the aspiration chamber from below the fluid surface (e.g., from a port located at the bottom or on a sidewall close to the bottom), it does not create disturbance at the liquid/air interface and thus does not disturb continuous level sensing. Also, since the aspiration port is placed at or very close to the bottom of the aspiration chamber, the liquid inside the chamber can be fully used for sustained reflux and push priming.

The distal part is short in length, is made of a high temperature material(s), has a proper shape for guiding light in a desired application, and may be coated with a reflective coating (512) to ensure that the light rays trapped within the part do not escape when the side of the part is in contact with high refractive index or absorptive materials. The distal part (506) may be made of high temperature material(s) such as high temperature plastic rods, glass optical fibers, and so on. The distal end may be tapered or sculpted to a desired configuration. The plastic optical fiber and the high temperature distal part may be joined, using an optical adhesive (204,304,404,504), inside a steel cannula (508), a plastic hub (510), an optical connector, etc.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for filtering light from a light source (220). More particularly, embodiments of the present invention may filter direct and reflected light provided from the light source to a source of illumination (212) by using one or more mirrors (230a,230b) in an optical path. In a specific embodiment, one or more cold mirrors (250) in the optical path are coated such that they are operable to reflect light in the desired wavelengths while transmitting other wavelengths of light. Thus, as light from a light source is reflected off these cold mirrors undesired wavelengths of light may be substantially removed from the light before it is utilized to illuminate an area. In other embodiments, one or more hot mirrors (260) may also be provided in the optical path, where these hot mirrors are coated such that they are operable to transmit the desired wavelengths of light and reflect undesired wavelengths.

A continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system (300) is provided by embodiments of the present invention. This continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system includes a unique fluid level sensor having a point light source (202), parabolic reflector (204), sensor array (308), and detection, processing and control system (310). The point light source illumines a parabolic reflector wherein the point light source is located at the focus of the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector reflects light from the point light source to produce a parallel light curtain (210). This parallel light curtain is parallel to an axis of symmetry of the parabolic reflector. The parallel light curtain illumines a chamber (302) such as a chamber in an ophthalmic surgical device used to contain surgical fluid (304). The sensor array coupled to the chamber detects the parallel light curtain illuminating the chamber. The sensor array provides an output to a detection/processing/control system in order to determine the fluid level within the chamber. This optical method of determining the surgical fluid levels may be advantageous in that it prevents physical contamination of the surgical fluids.

The present invention provides uses for specific connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) inhibitors in the manufacture of medicaments suitable for lowering intraocular pressure. In another aspect, the invention provides uses for cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors (for example, GW-8510, purvalanol A) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists (for example, troglitazonc, ciglitazonc, 15(S)HETE) for lowering intraocular pressure by administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of such an agent that inhibits expression and/or signaling of CTGF.
