The method further comprises forming a MOF film (12) on the main surface (14a) of the substrate (14) by forming organometallic compounds (34) from at least some of the organic building blocks (30) and at least some of the metallic precursors (32) of the precursor solution (22), wherein a modulator (28) is provided for mediating at least partly the morphology of the MOF film (12) during the formation of the MOF film (12) such as to increase a roughness of the MOF film (12). The invention further relates to a MOF and the use of a MOF.
