According to the invention, a drill rod comprising an inner channel is drilled into the rock. A free-flowing, self-hardening mass is pressed through the inner channel of the drill rod, filling the drilled hole, so that it hardens with the drill rod remaining in the drilled hole. The hardening mass is a mixture of a hardenable plastic and a hardening plastic. Said plastics are supplied to the inner channel of the drill rod over a pre-determined transport time F which corresponds to the hardening time. The hardening time is defined by the selection of the plastics and the mixing ratio thereof such that the transport time essentially corresponds to the hardening time and leads essentially to the flow path of the hardened mixture being completely filled between the mixing point and the output of the drilled hole.

A settable composition suitable for coating surfaces eg walls of a mine comprises (i) a cementitious composition comprising the following components:(a) at least 25% preferably at least 40% of a reactive cement having a C to A or(A + X) ratio of greater than 1:1 preferably greater than 1.2:1,where X is S* or S or F (b) from 0 to 10% of lime and(c) from 5 to 70% preferably 10 to 40% of calcium sulphate,and where the sum of (b) and (c) is at least 15%the % being by weight based on the combined weight of (a), (b) and (c) and where the proportions of the components are such that the composition on hydration is capable of absorbing at least its own weight of water and(ii) an aqueous emulsion of an organic polymer, the amount of (ii) in relation to (i) being such as to provide a weight ratio of polymer solids to combined weight of (a), (b)) and (c) of from 0.5:1 to 10:1, preferably 0.7:1 to 2:1 or(iii) an organic polymer in the form of a powder dispersible in water and where the amount of organic polymer is such as to give a weight ratio of polymer solids to combined weight of (a), (b) and (c) of from 0.5:1 to 10:1, preferably 0.7:1 to 2:1 andwhere the proportions of the components are selected from within the above defined ranges to provide a composition which on hydration will have a tensile strength at 4 hours of at least 135psi and an elongation at 7 days of at least 20 %.When the composition contains components (i) and (ii) the amount of water can be equal to at least 50% by weight of the weight of the cementitious composition (i), preferably from 70% to 250%.

Furthermore, when a conventional domed plate 10 is used, which reliably transmits the necessary stress forces, it is possible additionally to bond the anchor bar 4 in the drill hole 3 after stressing. To this end, the anchor bar 4 is either constructed with a connecting tube 22 with distributor head 24 or the sheathing tube 11 comprises a top tube 50, these both fulfilling the task of conveying the grout bonding material 12 reliably from the drill hole mouth end of the anchor bar 4 to the rock end 5A and then diverting it there and returning it to the drill hole mouth, so ensuring complete fixing and sheathing of the anchor bar 4 in the drill hole 3.

Disclosed is a mixture comprising two components to be mixed together to form a settable cementitious composition wherein a first component comprises: (a) Portland cement; (b) calcium sulphate; and (c) water in a weight ratio of water to Portland cement and calcium sulphate solids of from 0.5:1 to 5:1; and a second component comprises: (d) a water soluble silicate; and (e) water, in a weight ratio of water to silicate solids of from 1.5:1 to 25:1; which cementitious composition has a high early strength. The mixture is suitable to be used in an inflatable support for use in mines, since it hardens slowly and remains its plasticity in order to deform under load.
