The invention concerns a method of processing a plurality of data packets in a packet switched communication network comprising at least one switching device (1) as well as a corresponding switching device. The switching device (1) comprises two or more sub-engines (21,..., 29). A control unit (7) of the at least one switching device (1) receives a data packet comprising a header (10) of a communication packet exchanged via the communication network. The control unit (7) applies at least one filter operation (50) to the header (10) and generating thereby filtered information (100). The control unit (7) maps the filtered information (100) on a hash-tag (30) according to a hash-function (300). The control unit (7) provides a tagged-header (11) by means of inserting the hash-tag (30) in the header (10) of the data packet. The control unit (7) sends the data packet to a sub-engine (24) of the two or more sub-engines (21,..., 29) according to the tagged-header (11) for further processing of the data packet.

In such a way, reliable and cost-efficient quality of service management in a packet-based network (10) is facilitated.

Es wird ein Verfahren zur Zuweisung von Sendeberechtigungen an Endstellen (EST) eines der bidirektionalen Übertragung von paketorientierten Daten dienenden Kommunikationsnetzes mit einem Managementsystem (MS) und einer Zentrale angegeben. In der Zentrale ist eine den Dotenverkehr von den Endstellen (EST) zur Zentrale regelnde Zugriffssteuerung vorhanden, welcher von den Endstellen (EST) ausgesandte Informationen über sendebereite Daten aufgegeben werden und von welcher Sendeberechtigungen nach einem definierten, standardisierten Protokoll zu den Endstellen (EST) übertragen werden. Für ein allgemein gültiges, von der Art des Kommunikationsnetzes unabhängiges Verfahren wird die Zugriffssteuerung mit einem ersten Adaptions-Modul (2), einem Prozessor (3) und einem zweiten Adaptions-Modul (4) ausgerüstet. Dem ersten Adaptions-Modul (2) werden die Informationen der Endstellen (EST) aufgegeben. Er gibt dem Prozessor (3) unabhängig von der Art des Kommunikationsnetzes Kennungen der einzelnen Endstellen (EST) und die Anzahl der von diesen als sendebereit gemeldeten Bits bzw. Bytes auf. Der mit einem allgemeinen Algorithmus arbeitende Prozessor (3) gibt dem zweiten Adaptions-Modul (4) unter Berücksichtigung zumindest der zur Verfügung stehenden Bandbreite des Übertragungskanals und der geforderten Dienstequalität zumindest die Anzahl der von den einzelnen Endstellen (EST) abzusendenden Bits bzw. Bytes und deren Kennung auf und der zweite Adaptions-Modul (4) überträgt die entsprechenden Sendeberechtigungen an die Endstellen (EST) im dem jeweiligen Kommunikationsnetz angepaßten Protokoll.

The means for inspecting 14 is operative to perform a first packet inspection on the data packet header to determine information on a source or a destination of the data packet from the data packet header, and the means for inspecting 14 is operative to perform a second packet inspection on the data packet payload based on the information on the source or the destination of the data packet to determine information on an identification of the destination of the data packet. The apparatus 10 further comprises means for determining 16 information on a subsequent network node based on the information on the identification of the destination of the data packet.
