An electroluminescence device having a layer containing a specific metal coordination compound is provided. The metal coordination compound is represented by formula (1) below:

wherein M is a metal atom of Ir, Pt, Rh or Pd; L and L' are mutually different bidentate ligands; m is 1, 2 or 3 and n is 0, 1 or 2 with the proviso that m+n is 2 or 3; a partial structure MLm is represented by formula (2) shown below and a partial structure ML' n is represented by formula (3) or (4) shown below: The metal coordination compound of the formula (1) is characterized by having at least one aromatic substituent for at least one of CyN1, CyN2, CyC1 and CyC2. The metal coordination compound having the aromatic substituent is effective in providing high-efficiency luminescence, long-term high luminance, and less deterioration by current passing.

A liquid crystal device of the active matrix-type having two-dimensionally arranged pixels along rows and columns is driven frame by frame. In each frame operation, a scanning selection period (T G ) for each selected row is divided into a first period (t 1 ) and a second period (t 2 ). In t 1 of a current frame (T F2 ), a reset pulse is applied to a pixel concerned, and the reset pulse is set to have an absolute value of voltage identical to and a polarity opposite to those of a writing pulse voltage applied to the pixel in the previous frame (T F1 ). Then, in t 2 of the current frame (T F2 ), the pixel is supplied with a writing pulse depending on a prescribed display state of the pixel for the current frame. As a result, the reset period is shortened to favor a high-speed display and a higher resolution display.
