A multi-head optical scanning device used for a bar code reader having a reduced thickness and realizing more complete 360° bar code reading. The scanning device includes a bottom part (1), a side part (4) which is nearly vertical to the bottom part, a light source (5), a polygon mirror (6) and a light detector (8) contained inside the body of the side part. Light beams are emitted from the light source (5) so that they are nearly vertical to the surface of the bottom part (1), and the polygon mirror (6) has a rotation axis at a position which is nearly parallel to the surface of the bottom part. The optical scanning device eliminates the need for a mechanism which performs scanning inside the bottom part and the degree of freedom with which each of the pattern mirrors is disposed is increased, and provides a scanning pattern whose reading capacity can be upgraded by using a scanning pattern which is emitted from the bottom part (1).

A hologram scanner (30) comprising: a laser source (22); a rotary body (28) having a rotational axis (21); at least one hologram facet (24) arranged on the rotary body (28) for diffracting a laser beam from the laser source to scan an objective (e.g. bar code) and receiving the scattered light from the objective for detection thereof; a motor means (25) for driving the rotary body; and, an optical detector (29) for detecting the scattered light received and diffracted by the hologram facet (24). The hologram facet is inclined with respect to the rotational axis (21) of the rotary body.
