A lens grinding method of the present invention includes a first step for finding a lens-edge thickness over the entire circumference of a lens-edge vector radius locus of a lens to be cut , a second step for finding a lens-edge vertex position information for dividing the lens-edge into a desired ratio over the entire circumference thereof, and a third step for V-edge edging the lens-edge based on the V-edge vertex position information. Also, a lens grinding apparatus of the present invention includes measuring means (12) for finding a lens-edge thickness over the entire circumference of a lens-edge vector radius locus of a lens to be cut , input means (16) for inputting a desired ratio, calculating means (15) for finding a positional information of a V-edge vertex for dividing the lens-edge at the input ratio over the entire circumference thereof, and controlling means for V-edge edging the lens-edge based on the V-edge vertex positional information. And according to the lens grinding method and the apparatus for carrying out the method, as the lens-edge thickness is measured over the entire circumference of the lens-edge and the movement of the lens in the Z-axis direction is controlled such that the V-edge is formed at a desired ratio over the entire circumference of the lens-edge, the V-edge can be desirably positioned even if a lens having an aspherical refracting surface like a progressive multifocus lens.

Disclosure is given for a lens grinding apparatus, comprising a pair of lens shafts (5, 5') mounted on a carriage (4), a coarse grinding wheel (1) whith at least two kinds of V-edge grinders (2, 3) and an edge thickness measuring system (10) adapted to measure the edge thickness of the lens (L) held between the lens shafts (5, 5'). The measurements of the edge thickness of the lens (L), the selection of the medium V-edge grinder (2) or the small V-edge grinder (3) and the subjection of the lens (L) to the V-edge treatment can be automatically performed. An uncut lens judging apparatus for a lens grinding machine of the present invention has frame configuration input means for inputting a vector radius information of the configuration of a lens frame of a spectacle, judging means for judging whether an uncut lens is large enough to be cut into the lens frame configuration, and display means for displaying, when the judgement is negative, at least an angular direction of the vector radius which is judged to be not large enough. Another judging apparatus has correcting means capable of automatically correcting a cutting origin when the uncut lens is not large enough to be cut into a lens frame configuration, so that the uncut lens can be cut into the lens frame configuration. Furthermore, the judging apparatus has means for finding a cutting locus of an uncut lens corresponding to the lens frame configuration which has been input, judging means for judging whether the cutting loc isusy included in clamping range of the uncut lens by a lens clamping member, and alarm means for generating an alarm signal when the judging means judged as "included".
