Since the optical pickup device performs tracking by adjusting the reflection direction of incident light by means of a tracking mirror (50) with an objective lens (60) fixed, a tracking error signal offset due to movement of the objective lens (60) is not generated, thereby enabling stable tracking.

A reproducing/recording optical pickup compatible for discs having different thicknesses includes a transparent plate (2) having a central portion formed with a diffraction grating pattern (3) for diffracting the light travelling from the light source (1) to the objective lens (5), and a transparent portion through which the light passes, and a photodetector (9) having first and second (16, 17) light receiving portions. The zero-order transmitted light and the passing light are focused using all regions of the aperture of the objective lens (5) with respect to a thin disc (6). The positive first-order diffracted light by the diffraction grating pattern (3) of the transparent plate (2) is focused onto a thick disc (7) by partial regions of the objective lens (5). Then, the reflected lights thereof are detected by the first and second light receiving portions (16, 17). Since signals for reproduction and servo for each disc are detected as the detection signals of the first and second light receiving portions (16, 17), stable servo and noiseless reproduction is possible, irrespective of the thickness of the disc used.

A third area (66) that corresponds to a third value of the data in which the magnetic intensity detected by the read head corresponds to a "0". Accordingly, the ternary data can be recorded using the characteristic that a signal having a width narrower than the detection width of the read head is not detected by the read head. The third area (66) is recorded by a high frequency signal generator generating a high frequency signal having a higher frequency than a write frequency corresponding to the minimum write width.

Thus, since the inclination of the recording medium (30) is detected using the light emitted from the light source (35) and reflected by the surface of the protection layer (33) or the recording surface (30), of the recording medium, without an additional tilt sensor, the number of parts is reduced and the structure of the device is simplified.
