A control mechanism is provided for operating a control valve in a water conditioning system. The control mechanism includes a timing mechanism for regulating the regeneration cycle and service cycle of the water conditioning system and a control valve positioning mechanism for operating the control valve of the water conditioning system. The control valve positioning mechanism and the timing mechanism are driven by a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism includes a timing drive gear which is in driving engagement with the timing mechanism and a control valve drive gear which is in driving engagement with the control valve positioning mechanism. A clutch selectively couples the control valve drive gear to the timing drive gear to provide selective conjoint rotation of the control valve drive gear with the timing drive gear. The clutch includes a coupling member having a first end wrapped around a stem of the timing drive gear and a second end wrapped around the stem of the control valve drive gear. When the timing drive gear is rotated the coupling member couples the control valve drive gear to the timing drive gear for conjoint rotation. However, when the clutch is selectively gripped by a pivotable cam arm, the control valve drive gear is uncoupled from the timing drive gear such that the timing drive gear rotates without any corresponding rotation of the control valve drive gear.

A seal mechanism (22) for a rotary control valve having a housing with a plurality of ports and a generally cylindrical rotor having an external surface and a plurality of ports rotatably located within the housing. The seal mechanism is located between the external surface of the rotor and the housing and includes a generally cylindrical collar (142) which extends substantially around the circumference of the rotor. The collar includes one or more ports adapted to respectively align with the ports in the rotor and in the housing and a groove extending around each collar port. A seal member (138) having an aperture, an outwardly extending first flange (184) and an inwardly extending second flange (192) is located within the groove of the collar. The first flange has a first sealing face adapted to sealingly engage the housing and the second flange includes a second sealing face adapted to sealingly engage the external surface of the rotor. The seal member is adapted to provide a sealed fluid passage through the aperture of the seal member between a port of the rotor and a port of the housing. A retainer member is associated with the seal member and includes an outer rim having an outer peripheral edge and an inner rim having an outer peripheral edge. The first flange of the seal member extends around the outer edge of the outer rim and the second flange of the seal member extends around the outer edge of the inner rim.

A control valve (20) is provided for a water conditioning system having a mineral tank. The control valve includes a housing (22) having an upper body portion (24) and a lower body portion (26). The housing defines a chamber located between the upper and lower body portions. The upper body portion includes a first upper port, a second upper port, and a third upper port. The lower body portion includes a first lower port, second lower port, and a third lower port which provide fluid communication with the tank. A cylindrical disk (200) is located within the chamber and is selectively rotatable about a central axis. The disk includes an upper face having a generally centrally located aperture and a peripherally located aperture. The disk also includes a spaced apart lower face having a first peripherally located aperture and a second peripherally located aperture. A first fluid passage extends through the disk between the centrally located aperture in the upper face and the first peripherally located aperture in the lower face. A second fluid passage extends through the disk between the peripherally located aperture in the upper face and the second peripherally located aperture in the lower face. Rotation of the disk about the central axis to one of various different positions as desired provides selective fluid communication between the upper ports in the upper body portion and the lower ports in the lower body portion of the control valve.

A fluid injector assembly for drawing a first fluid into the flow of a second fluid. The injector assembly includes an eductor including an inlet having a plurality of openings, a first outlet port, and a first fluid passage extending between the inlet and the first outlet port. The openings are generally disposed tangentially to the first fluid passage. The inlet is adapted to be placed in fluid communication with the second fluid such that the second fluid flows through the first fluid passage from the inlet to the first outlet port. The fluid injector assembly also includes a throat having an inlet port, a second outlet port and a second fluid passage extending between the inlet port and the second outlet port. The inlet port of the throat is spaced apart from the first outlet port of the eductor forming a gap therebetween. The gap is adapted to be placed in fluid communication with the first fluid. As the second fluid flows through the first passage, the tangential openings of the eductor cause the second fluid to swirl as the second fluid flows through the first fluid passage and to form a vortex in the gap as the second fluid flows out of the first outlet port. The vortex of the second fluid creates a low pressure zone within the gap which draws the first fluid into the gap wherein the first fluid and the second fluid enter the inlet port of the throat and flow through the second fluid passage.
