A microprocessor-based control circuit (26) monitors mistie switches (32) provided for the knotter mechanism of a rectangular baler. Each knotter has a switch which is actuated a first time when the knotter cycles and a second time if the knotter ties a knot in a loop of twine around a bale. The control circuit controls a visual display (28) to give an operator a first indication if the knotter does not cycle and a second indication if it fails to tie the knot.

Said arm position sensor arrangement (200, 250) including a rotary potentiometer (210, 236) having a rotatable sensing shaft (224), a follower arm (228, 272) having a first end coupled to said rotatable sensing shaft (224) and having a separate end located in a path of movement of the twine tensioner arm (172, 252) for being engaged by, and moved together with, the tensioner arm (172, 252) as it moves between said upper and lower extreme positions, with the potentiometer (210, 236) generating an electrical signal representative of the position of the tensioner arm (172, 252) at any given time. The knotter clutch control (56) prevents the driven dog (38) of the clutch (20) from flipping out into its actuated position for engagement with the driving lug (40) of the clutch (20) unless the lug (40) is in a position wherein positive driving engagement between the lug (40) and the dog (38) is assured. A strategically positioned control lobe (92) on the cam ring (42) of the drive sprocket (32) for the clutch (20) blocks release of the dog (38) into its extended position when the driving lug (40) is at the lug pickup point on its path of travel. The dog (38) is free to be released when the lug (40) is at all other positions on its path of travel so as to be in position for engagement with the lug (40) when it next arrives at the pickup point. The dog (38) is reset into its retracted position after a single revolution of the knotter drive shaft (22).
