A breathing air production and filtration system has an air generation assembly and a distribution assembly. The generation assembly has a compressor and filtration components to generate breathing air. The distribution assembly has collection pots with multiple connections for manifolds. For their part, the manifolds have multiple connectors for the respirators of end users. The system uses a monitoring control system with various wireless sensors to monitor operation of the system and the quality of breathing air produced. These sensors include an in-line sensor detecting constituents or contaminants in the breathing air. The sensors also include pressure, temperature, and flow sensors monitoring the operation of the system. An automatic switchover is provided for switching the system to a back-up supply of high-pressure reserve air if needed.

A method and apparatus for purifying air to deactivate toxic chemical and biological species such as Sarin, mustard gas, phosgene, cyanogen chloride, Anthrax spores, E. coli bacteria, Salmonella bacteria, Hepatitis virus, and Norwalk virus. The apparatus comprises a reaction chamber coupled to a counterflow heat exchanger. Incoming contaminated air is directed through a heating side of a counterflow heat exchanger to preheat it. The air is further heated to a temperature of at least 200 °C, which is sufficient to deactivate common biological toxic species. Optionally, the reaction chamber may include a catalyst on a surface area over which the heated air is directed, which enables a thermocatalytic reaction that is particularly effective in deactivating biological and chemical warfare agents, such as anthrax and Sarin. Portable embodiments of the invention are useful in both military and civilian air purifying applications, while fixed installation of the apparatus are useful in deactivating toxic species from the air in areas where food is prepared or stored, or in purifying air in the environment of a living space.

A life support system is provided for users located within enclosed areas to supply them with fresh air from a location exterior of the enclosed area, and is particularly adapted for use in emergency circumstances such as when fire and smoke fill enclosed areas. The system can be used in buildings and in aircraft and can be adapted for use with the gasper outlets presently employed on aircraft. The system includes a face mask (8) connected to a gasper outlet (13) via hose (3). One way valves (10 and 16) direct fresh exterior air to the mask and one way valve (9) directs exhaled gases from the mask. A method for providing fresh exterior air to the enclosed area and the user includes conducting the air to an outlet for the exterior air which is located within the area, conducting the exterior air from the outlet to at least one breathing cavity of the user, and preventing the user from inhaling ambient atmosphere from within the enclosed area.
