It is an object of the present invention to provide a black ink for an ink jet which possesses preferable color as a black ink for an ink jet, can attain high ozone resistance, high image density and sticking recovery property, and can suppress the decomposition of the compound represented by the general formula (I) or salt thereof during long-term storage. According to the present invention, there is provided a black ink for an ink jet characterized by comprising at least a compound represented by the following general formula (I) or a salt thereof, characterized in that the black ink comprises at least one moisture-retaining nitrogen compound, and the pH of the ink and the pH of the ink after storing for 10 days in an environment at a temperature of 60°C are 9.5 or less.

An anthrapyridone composition of the formula: (I) is disclosed, where 'A' and 'B' are independently selected from substituted or unsubstituted cyclic ketone groups having from about 10 to about 20 ring carbon atoms; 'a' is an integer having a value from 0 - 4, R1 - R4 are monovalent substituents; with the proviso that when 'a' is 0, R1 is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen, an alkyl group, a secondary amino group and an aminosulphonyl group; and R2 - R4 are substituents selected form the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, an aliphatic group, an aromatic group, a heterocylic group, a halogen atom, a cyano group, a carbonyl containing group, an amino group and a sulphonyl-containing group. The anthrapyridones are useful as thermally stable colorants for producing colored polymer resins and articles that require high temperature polymer processing conditions.

Novel anthrapyridone compounds or salts thereof which have a magenta hue suitable for ink-jet recording and brightness and give recorded images having high fastness to light and water. The compounds are represented by the formula A-B [wherein A represents a dye residue represented by formula (1), (wherein R1 represents hydrogen, alkoxycarbonyl, or benzoyl and R2 represents hydrogen or methyl); and B represents hydrogen or a substituent on the dye residue A]. The water-based ink composition contains any of the compounds and salts. The method for ink-jet printing employs the same.

Anthrapyridonedisulfonic acid of formula (1) or salts thereof; aqueous magenta ink compositions containing the acid or the salts; and an ink-jet recording method by using the same. The above compounds are excellent in water solubility, and the aqueous magenta ink compositions have good storage stability. Further, the ink-jet recording method can give records exhibiting highly reproducible, vivid hues and high resistances to light and water.

A water-based magenta ink composition which has satisfactory storage stability, has a hue and brightness suitable for ink-jet recording, and gives prints having high fastness to light and water; and a magenta dye suitable therefor. The water-based magenta ink composition is characterized by containing as a colorant a disulfonic acid of the compound represented by formula (2) or a salt of the acid. A method of ink-jet recording with the composition is provided. The magenta dye is reduced in the contents of monosulfonic acids and inorganic metal salts, and is suitable for use in the ink composition.
