The invention relates to a method for producing a cylinder jacket, comprising the following steps: producing a cylindrical starting product from a steel material having a carbon content of not more than 0.8% by weight and a ferritic or ferritic/pearlitic structure; enriching, by carburization, the surface layer of the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical starting product with carbon in the form of carbides that are deposited on the grain boundaries; slowly cooling the cylindrical starting product in such a manner that a pearlitic structure having a carbide network is formed in the surface layer; finishing the cylindrical starting product to give a cylinder jacket. The invention also relates to a cylinder jacket produced by said method.

A process for making full dense components of a carbon-containing steel, comprises the steps of: a) making a powder of the carbon-containing steel by gas atomization wherein the carbon content is low, less than 0.15 wt %, b) agglomerating the powder from step a) with at least one hydrocolloid and elemental carbon, c) compacting the agglomerated powder from step b) to a density of at least 80% of theoretical density, with the proviso that the compacted agglomerated powder still is porous allowing transport of gas to and from its interior, and d) sintering the compacted powder to a density of more than 98% of theoretical density, preferably more than 99% of theoretical density, wherein a gas comprising carbon is added during sintering and finally subjecting the component to HVC. Advantages include that it is possible to manufacture a dense component of powders which otherwise are difficult to compact.

A process is provided for modifying the magnetic properties of an intermetallic compound comprising at least iron, or a combination of iron with at least one transition metal, and at least one rare earth element. The process comprises heating the intermetallic compound in a reaction gas containing at least one element of groups IIIA, IVA or VIA of the Periodic Table in the gaseous phase to interstitially incorporate the element or elements of these groups into the crystal lattice of the intermetallic compound. Novel magnetic materials showing easy uniaxial anisotropy, increased spontaneous magnetization and Curie temperatures are produced by the process.
