A remote control system for a user to operate at least one device using a remote controller (10) includes device specification means (11, 14) for specifying a device located in front of the user who is holding the remote controller (10) via a first communication medium under a constraint on at least one of directivity and a transmittable distance, and remote control means (11, 15) for transmitting a remote control request from the remote controller (10) to the specified device via a second communication medium under less constraint on the directivity and the transmittable distance in accordance with an instruction input from the user.

The present invention relates to a method for selecting at least one of a plurality of controllable devices (121-123), wherein each of the controllable devices (121- 123) is adapted to transmit a distinguishable signal. The method comprising the steps of receiving (301) the signals from the plurality of controllable devices by means of a plurality of receiver modules comprised in a control device (110), wherein each receiver module separately detects a contribution of the signals; determining (302), using a correlation between the different signal contributions, a width and an angle of incidence for each of the signals; comparing (303-304) the width and the angle of incidence for each of the signals with a set of predetermined criteria; and selecting (305) at least one of the plurality of controllable devices best matching the set of predetermined criteria.

A controller for a device transmitting commands across one or more communication channels. Each such channel may employ a separate medium, such as radio waves and infrared light. The controller may transmit two separate signals to a device, where one signal is sent via radio waves and the other by infrared light. One signal may correspond to a group identifier and the other to an operating command to be carried out by the device. The device may receive both signals and, if the device belongs to a group corresponding to the group identifier, it may execute the operating command. Alternatively, the group identifier may be replaced by a wake command and the device may execute the operating command only if the wake command is received.

A broadcast receiving apparatus (100) wherein a user is able to control a graphical user interface (GUI) using a pointing device (200), and a control method thereof are provided. The broadcast receiving apparatus (100) receives a movement pattern from the pointing device (200), and operates a function corresponding to the pattern. The broadcast receiving apparatus (100) conveniently switches the pointing device (200) between a position mode and a step mode, without having a key for switching between the position mode and the step mode or direction keys.

Ein an einer Drucktaste (4) einschaltbarer und in der Hand (2) eines Benutzers gehaltener Fernbedienungsgeber (3) der Fernbedienungseinrichtung eines elektrischen Gerätes (1) erzeugt Abstrahlungsfelder (5, 6) unterschiedlich gekennzeichneter Trägerwellen (7, 8) unterschiedlicher Richtung. Die Empfangsfeldstärke der an einem Empfangselement (14) der Fernbedienungseinrichtung empfangenen Trägerwellen (7, 8) werden gemessen und daraus in einem Richtungsdetektor Steuersignale gebildet, die die Winkelablage (Alpha) der Zeigerrichtung (9) des Fernbedienungsgebers (3) von einer Richtung (13) auf ein visuell sichtbares Markierungselement (12) kennzeichnen und damit über einen Befehlswähler Bedienungsbefehle zur Steuerung des elektrischen Gerätes (1) aus einem Befehlsspeicher abzurufen. The communication device can easily serve as an extended user interface such as a remote controller of a target apparatus without causing any complicated operations to a user. The communication device includes the following units. An apparatus information obtainment unit (203) obtains apparatus information from an apparatus. A position information obtainment unit (206) obtains position information of the communication device (102). An operation information obtainment unit (212) obtains operation information based on the apparatus information. A storage unit (213) stores the position information as apparatus position information indicating as a position of the apparatus, in association with the operation information. A direction sensor unit (207) detects direction of the communication device (102). A directional space calculation unit (208) calculates a directional space of the communication device (102). A selection unit (209a) specifies the apparatus existing in the directional space based on the apparatus position information and selects the operation information associated with the specified apparatus. An operation information transmission unit (215) transmits, based on the selected operation information, a control signal to the specified apparatus so as to allow the communication device to operate the apparatus.
