    摘要: An arcuate scan tape drive for transferring data to and from a data tape (26). Situated within a base (22) and cover (24) is a head carrier assembly (36) for recording data onto and playing back data from the data tape which advances in a longitudinal direction past the head carrier assembly. The head carrier assembly (36) includes an inside-out spin motor (40) for rotating the head carrier assembly and a pivot motor (72) at the rear of the head carrier assembly for pivoting the head carrier assembly in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of advancement of the tape (26). The spin motor (40) and pivoting motor (72) receive servo signals from a controller so as to continuously adjust the position of the core elements (46) with respect to the data tape so as to align the core elements with the arcuately-shaped data tracks (118).

One of the edge guides (64) is rigidly mounted (66) and the other edge guide (68) is compliantly mounted (70). The rigidly mounted edge guide (64),(66) is adjustable. Any adjustment of the rigid edge guide (64),(66) to change the lateral position of guided magnetic tape is absorbed by the compliantly mounted edge guide (68),(70) without adjustment thereof.

    摘要: A variable width flat tape head for bi-directional contact recording and method for making the same has significant advantages over both traditional contoured tape heads and single width flat heads for contact recording applications. The variable width head and process disclosed herein allows for greater ease of manufacturing, efficient layout of the devices on thin film wafers and provides a significant cost reduction in the production of the head compared to traditionally contoured tape heads. In addition, the present invention reduces unnecessary surface area where the tape contacts the head, thus reducing tape wear and damage that is present in single width flat heads (where the tape is in contact uniformly across the tape width), thereby providing a concomitant improvement in tape wear and life. In addition, the head of the present invention is simpler and less costly to manufacture than comparable devices with distinct advantages to the magnetoresistive ("MR") read element stripe height control process, device alignment and assembly processes particularly with respect to traditionally contoured tape heads, which require more complex and expensive manufacturing operations to form the tape head profile.

    摘要: An air bearing (20) for use on a tape transport apparatus is connectable to an air source (80) and supports a tape (14) on a cushion of air as the tape is transported. The air bearing comprises a housing (22) having an air inlet (34) adapted for connection to the air source and a bearing member (40) disposed on the housing and located so that the tape is transported across a bearing surface. The housing and the bearing member are configured to form a plenum chamber having an interior in fluid communication with the air inlet. At least a portion of the bearing member is fabricated out of a porous material allowing pressurized air in the plenum chamber to pass therethrough and out of the bearing surface to produce the cushion of air. A tape transport apparatus incorporating these features is also provided.
