The channels reduce the effective height of debris in the channels near the transducers. The channel floors (258, 260) may have a transverse slope, and the tape bearing surface between channels may be tapered. Transverse slots (254, 256) help direct debris away from the transducers. The channels overlap the end sections (34, 36) of the transducers and help to define the shape and position of the transducer's active section (37). When applied to a two pole write transducers, the channels narrow and equalize the effective width of the top and bottom poles. Narrow equal-sized poles can write narrow data tracks with a track width that is independent of the magnetic medium's direction of motion.

A method and apparatus for processing a magnetic transducer (10) uses a gallium ion beam (210) to precisely define a pole tip region of the magnetic transducer. The precision pole tip widths provide a transducer that may record correspondingly precise track widths on a magnetic storage medium, such as a rotating disk. During the ion milling process an image detector (207) determines an image of the pole tip region to control subsequent ion beam milling with either a focused or defocused ion beam. Subsequent to the ion milling process, the magnetically conductive properties of the pole tip region, which may be degraded as a result of unwanted ion implantation during the ion milling process, are restored by means of a lapping process.
