The present invnention relates to a coupling node (MG1) for coupling of communications in a telecommunication system, comprising networks (N1, N2) with different signal formats. The coupling node has switching and trunking functions (CP21, CP23) corrsponding to the signal formats, and telefunctions, e.g. coders/decoders (F21) and echo cancellers (F22), which the node can vouple into a communication by means of a selector (PS1). The functions are supported by printed board assemblies (CB1-CB9) in magazines (SR1), and th eprinted board assemblies have signal processors (DSP11-DSP13) with access points (SAP11-SAP14). The selector hunts one of the signal processors for handlingone of the functions. If the processor has sufficiently free memory space in its data store and in its instruction memory and sufficient processor capacity, this processor is selected. Otherwise a new processor is hunted which is investigated in the same way.

The invention relates to a method for setting up a mobile radio connection to a mobile station (MS) in a cellular mobile radio network. According to said method, each cell of the mobile radio network can be identified by an identification character and a plurality of cells form a localisation area of the mobile radio network. In order to localise the mobile station (MS) inside a localisation area, paging is regularly carried out from a switching centre (MSC) in pre-definable time intervals, and a first mobile radio connection to the mobile station (MS) is set up by the paging, whereupon a paging response message is generated from the mobile station (MS) and transmitted over the existing first radio connection. When the paging response message is received, said first mobile radio connection to the mobile station (MS) from the mobile switching centre (MSC) is maintained for a pre-determinable time span, said first mobile radio connection between the mobile switching centre (MSC) and the mobile station (MS) being used to set up a mobile temrinating call (MTC) when a call setup from or to the mobile station (MS) is triggered within the time span from the reception of the paging response message.

The narrowband signaling is transported on permanent paths over ATM connections, and the narrowband speech channels are transported on ATM and switched on a 'per call basis' (on-demand) through an ATM switch. The hybrid STM/ATM network has an access node (22) which services narrowband terminals and which generates a signaling message in connection with call setup. A translator (50) formats the first signaling message into ATM cells so that the first signaling message can be routed through an ATM switch (40) to a circuit switched (STM) node (30). The circuit switched node (PSTN/ISDN) sets up a physical connection for the call and generates a further signaling message for the call, the further signaling message pertaining to the physical connection. The ATM switch routes an ATM cell-formatted version of the further signaling message to another ATM switch over an ATM physical interface (41). Thus, the ATM switch switches both narrow band traffic and signaling for the call over the ATM physical interface.

A control means (11, 12, 21 to 23, 31 to 33, 41 and 42) is in connection with the subscriber terminal of the telecommunication system, and is regularly, or at a preferred time, in connection with the service database means (10, 20, 30 and 40) for transmission of service information to the control means (11, 12, 21 to 23, 31 to 33, 41 and 42). The control means (11, 12, 21 to 23, 31 to 33, 41 and 42) controls the call set-up of the subscriber terminal so that the subscriber uses the operator (15-17, 25, 26, 35, 45, 46) offering the most inexpensive teleservice. To further increase the efficiency, the service database means (10, 20, 30 and 40) form their own service areas, which are connected to each other as a network.
