A method and system for encoding control data into the horizontal overscan area of a video signal. Because the control data is concatenated with the video signal on a line-by-line basis, the control data is temporarily synchronized with the underlying video signal. This permits the controlled devices, such as wireless mechanical characters, behave as characters in a scene defined by the programming information of the video signal. A protocol is defined for the encoded data that is addressable, forwardly compatible, error tolerant, and feasible to deploy in connection with a system that is primarily intended to be a children's entertainment product. The bandwidth of the communication link defined by the encoded data is adjustable to meet the cost and performance needs of a wide variety of consumers. Sufficient bandwidth is available to control several devices and to provide additional advertising, subscription, or emergency warning services, such as e-mail, foreign language subtitling, intercom capability, telephone pages, weather warnings, configuration data for a set-top box, and so forth.

A spread spectrum system provides bidirectional digital communication on a vacant television (TV) channel for simultaneous use by more than 75,000 subscribers using time and frequency division multiplex signals locked to horizontal and vertical sync pulses of an adjacent channel Host TV station (10). The system, whose operation is analogous to a radar system, comprises: (1) the Host TV station (10) to send down-link sync and data pulses to subscribers during the horizontal blanking interval (HBI), (2) subscriber ''transponder'' (14, 15, 16, 25) which detect those signals and transmits up-link ''echo'' data pulses only during the HBI to eliminate interference to TV viewers, and (3) a central receiver (6) which also uses the host TV sync pulses to trigger range gates to detect the up-link data pulses. In a preferred embodiment the central receiver employs directional antennas (28) to determine direction to transponders (14) and to define angular sectors partioning the service area into pie-link ''cells'' which permit frequency re-use in non-contiguous sectors (like cellular radio).

2.1. Die terrestrische Sendernetzinfrastruktur enthält bereits überwiegend in den bildfreien Zeilen Prüfzeilen und Videotext. Drahtlose Zusatzdienste scheitern vielfach an zu hohen Kosten für Fernsehstudios und Frequenzknappheit. Die Erfindung hat sich deshalb die Aufgabe gestellt, die ungenützte Kanalkapazität des TV-Kanals für weitere Zusatzsignale noch optimaler zu nutzen. 2.2. Sowohl sende- als auch empfangsseitig werden die Takte für zusätzlich zu übertragende Video- und Audiodaten aus dem FBAS-Nutzsignal durch Auszählen, Bewerten und Entscheiden gebildet, wobei beide Signale sendeseitig getrennt digitalisiert, gespeichert, gepuffert und komprimiert werden, bevor sie dem Nutzbildsignal überlagert werden. Empfangsseitig erfolgen nach gleicher Takterzeugung die Schritte in umgekehrter Richtung. Die Realisierung kann auf der Senderseite mittels Zusatzgerät, empfängerseitig durch Software im Computer oder Zusatzeinrichtungen im üblichen TV-Empfänger erfolgen. 2.3. Die Anwendung kann für beliebige zusätzliche Bild- und Tonsignale erfolgen. Eine bevorzugte spezielle Anwendungsmöglichkeit ist ein kommunaler Bildrundfunk ähnlich einem Lichtbildervortrag.
