An evacuation or rescue device (100) for a bed-ridden or non-ambulatory person (103) adapted to quickly secure the person (103) to a movable underlying mattress (109) or the like comprises two sheets (101, 101') deployable one from the head-end and one from the foot-end. When deployed the head-end sheet (101') meets the foot-end sheet (101) over the person's chest or head. The two sheets (101, 101') which are interconnected underneath the mattress (109) are then tightened downwardly over the long sides of the mattress (109) by means of looped ropes (105) pulled one from the head-end side and the other from the foot-end side. The ropes (105) are self cleating when tightened and quickly secure the person (103) in readiness for rescue and evacuation by a single individual if necessary.

Provided are a care method that can simplify care and reduce the burden on a carer, in particular the burden on the carer during the transfer of a care receiver. Also provided is a care robot. A sheet 30 is spreaded out on top of a bed, and the care receiver is made to lie on the sheet 30. The sheet is formed so that both ends thereof have parts 31 to be held that are held by arms 5b of a robot R. The robot R and the arms 5b are positioned relative to the care receiver, and the robot R is moved forward towards the bed so that the arms 5b are holding the parts 31 to be held. The arms 5b are raised by prescribed amount, and when the arms 5b are in the raised state, the robot R is moved backwards away from the bed.

A system for visually identifying a patient transfer device, and distinguishing the patient transfer device from other patient transfer devices in a set of transfer devices is provided. The transfer device includes an inflatable mattress. The system comprises a plurality of identifier elements arranged about the mattress and adapted to present a unified appearance. The appearance of the identifier elements substantially distinct from that of the mattress such that the eye of a viewer is automatically drawn to the identifier elements. The identifier elements may include a plurality of side pull straps adapted for sliding the mattress along an underlying surface. According to one embodiment, the identifier elements include tabs to which fasteners are mounted for realizably attaching an accessory to the mattress.
