A vertically sliding freight elevator landing door with a safety brake (31) that deploys when a chain (26) suspending the door breaks. The safety brake is adapted for use on both panels (11,12) that slide up to open or that slide down to open. The brake, which is simple in construction and installation, comprises, principally, a caliber block (3) fixed to the door and a roller cam (34) assembled in the block. A spring (36) biases the roller cam towards a wedge lock position while a cable normally holds the roller cam in an inactive position. The cable and, therefore, the roller cam are released when the associated door suspension chain breaks. The roller cam, operating between a tilted internal surface in the caliper block and a door guide rail (16) quickly frictionally brakes the door on the guard rail.

In particular the invention provides door arrangements that permit greater versatility in the space utilization within a hoistway (2) of an elevator system (1). The landing and car (4) are provided with horizontally sliding doors (10;12) each formed from one or more panels (11;13) wherein the number of panels (11 ) in the landing door (10) is unequal to the number of panels (13) in the car door (12). Accordingly, the dimensions of the door-receiving spaces (B;A) for the landing door (10) and the car door (12) are unequal giving the installation designer greater flexibility to manipulate the layout of equipment within the hoistway (3).

A flexible cable (33) links the doors (22, 23) for simultaneous movement in opposite direction towards and away from a shut position. The cable (33) is secured to the doors (22, 23) adjacent zones (26) thereof which abut when the doors are shut. The door assembly may be in an access opening in a car of the lift or in a landing opening.

The invention relates to a switching device (4) for an elevator door (2) for providing a door contact signal (S). The switching device (4) comprises a magnet (20), a plurality of proximity sensors (22a, 22b; 22c, 22d), and a detection area (DR), which is adjoined by the proximity sensors (22a, 22b; 22c, 22d) and in which the magnet (20) can be moved. A sensor signal (24a, 24b, 24c, 24d) can be generated by each of the proximity sensors (22a, 22b; 22c, 22d) in at least one position of the magnet (20) in the detection area (DR), wherein the sensor signals (24a, 24b, 24c, 24d) are dependent on the distance from the magnet (20) to the proximity sensors (22a, 22b; 22c, 22d). The invention also relates to a method for providing a door contact signal (S) by means of said switching device (4).

The mechanism comprises a multiple node scissors linkage that is configured to be easily installed and initially adjusted and which has its parts symmetrically balanced about a vertical plane such that excessive eccentric loading on the components is reduced and a long service life is obtained with reduced wear and a reduced need for periodic adjustment.
