A composite cylinder constructed from a cylindrical liner (12) having an outer surface (18) which is dome shaped adjacent each end. A plurality of layers (30) of resin impregnated carbon filaments are wound on the outer surface (18) of the liner (19) and over the dome shaped portions. Preferably the filaments are helically wound and are wound at an angle with respect to the access of the cylindrical liner (12) such that radial stress as applied during operation will not tend to displace the filaments wound over the dome shaped portions of the liner (12). The composite cylinder is useful as an integral part of a hydraulic actuator used to position flight control surface on aircraft.

A fastening yoke, e.g. comprising two halves (6a, 6b), is clampable with the aid of at least one clamping screw (8r) for fixing it in a desired axial position along the cylinder tube. In accordance with the invention the opposing clamping portions (6ar, 6br) of the fastening yoke act on two intermediate clamping blocks (10ar, 10b) which are thus pivoted in opposite directions, so that clamping is achieved exclusively against the inner and outer side portions (2i, 2y and 3i, 3y), whereby internal deformation of the cylinder tube (1) is prevented.

Preferably, seals (68,58,80,82) are provided between the rod (22), gland (40) and recess (42). Hence, the rod and gland can move radially while a fluid tight seal is maintained between the atmosphere and the interior of the cylinder to retain pressurized fluid therein. Preferably, to facilitate radial movement of the rod (22) and hence the gland (40) in the recess (42), the forces on opposed faces of the gland (40) are equalized by an appropriate arrangement of seals to define equal surface areas on the opposed faces both of which communicate (88) with the interior of the cylinder.

Une source sismique (10) actionne un ou plusieurs jets d'eau a grande vitesse en milieu aquatique et arrete soudainement les jets. La force de ces colonnes d'eau creent des poches de vapeur dans l'eau loin de l'enveloppe (12) de la source, cavites qui se resorbent de maniere coherente pour produire le signal sismique. Un piston (22) et une soupape en forme de manchon (38) sont montes coulissants dans un cylindre (14). Le piston enferme sur sa partie arriere un volume de gaz. La partie avant du piston definit une surface d'une chambre (24). La chambre recoit de l'eau haute pression par une admission. En position arriere, la soupape-manchon ferme hermetiquement un ensemble d'orifices de jets (60) sur le cote du cylindre. En position avant la soupape-manchon ouvre les orifices exposant l'interieur de la chambre au milieu aquatique. Avec la soupape-manchon en position arriere, les orifices etant fermes, l'eau haute pression qui entre dans la chambre (24) deplace le piston en position arriere et comprime le gaz. Le manchon (38) est actionne hydrauliquement sur commande pour ouvrir brusquement les orifices de jets, permettant au piston de se deplacer vers l'avant sous la pression du gaz comprime, chassant l'eau au travers des orifices de jets pour produire les jets. Le piston (22) penetre a l'interieur (40) du manchon (38) pres de l'extremite de sa course avant et, conjointement, arrete brusquement les jets. Pour rearmer la source, le manchon est actionne pour fermer les orifices des jets, puis l'eau haute pression remet le piston (22) en place. Lors de la commande suivante, la soupape-manchon (38) est de nouveau actionnee pour ouvrir les orifices et un nouveau signal sismique se produit.

The invention relates to a sealing system for sealing a cylinder head (2) against a cylinder sleeve (1) of a single- or multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, notably a four-stroke diesel engine, with a divided cast iron crankcase consisting of two half-shells (3) connected to each other by screws, and wherein the joint plane runs in the direction of the crankshaft and the cylinder axis. The half-shells (3) comprise recesses for housing separate cylinder sleeves (1) and separate cylinder heads (2) are provided for each cylinder. The inventive sealing system comprises an annular sealing element. An annular groove (7), being open towards the combustion chamber, is provided in the cylinder head (2) and arranged in such a way that at least part of the prolongation of the cylinder sleeve (1) configured as sealing unit (5) is housed thereby forming a press fit. The annular sealing element is configured as a separate annular seal (4) which is supported on a sealing surface of the cylinder head (2) and radially supported on a sealing surface of the half-shells (3). Said annular seal thereby seals an annular gap (16) between the radially outer peripheral surface of the cylinder head (2) and the recesses of the half-shells.
