A light source assembly (7) provided above the float (5) emits a light beam towards a surface of said float, which surface being diffuse reflective. Sensing means (8, 15) senses diffused light reflected from said float surface, and processing means (18) receives and processes input from said sensing means (8, 15) based on the diffused reflected light so as to calculate the level position of the float (5) and thereby the volume of liquid (6) present in the vessel (1).
