A liquid crystal device is constituted by a pair of substrates each having thereon an electrode, and a liquid crystal disposed between the substrates so as to be supplied with a voltage applied between the electrodes. The pair of substrates are provided with uniaxial aligning axes which are parallel but opposite to each other. The liquid crystal is a chiral smectic liquid crystal having a phase transition series of isotropic phase, cholesteric phase and chiral smectic C phase or a phase transition series of isotropic phase and chiral smectic C phase, respectively, on temperature decrease, and is placed in a monostable state under no voltage application and is placed in an alignment state exhibiting a pretilt angle of at least 4 degrees at a boundary thereof with at least one of the substrates.

The ratio Δ/Υ of the angle between the rubbing direction and the smectic layer normal to the tilt angle is at least 0.41. The liquid crystal mixture preferably has the phase sequence I-N-C and the tilt angle Υ at 25 °C ranges from 19° to 39°.

A tunable liquid crystal switch (10) is disclosed. An electronic controller (30) provides an electronic drive scheme for achieving low intra-channel crosstalk of less than -40dB using only electronic compensation. A cross-talk less than -50dB is provided by combining coarse temperature tuning and electronic compensation. This is achieved by designing the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal device (20) to cause a minimum to occur at a wavelength longer than a longest operating wavelength and at a temperature greater than a maximum operating temperature. This ensures that the liquid crystal device (20) is tunable over all operating wavelengths and temperatures using electronic compensation.

Each auxiliary electrode is disposed between an associated principal electrode and the light-transmissive substrate so as to be electrically connected with the associated principal electrode, and the auxiliary electrodes being disposed with spacings therebetween which are filled with the insulating layer. The second electrode plate comprises a light-transmissive substrate (1), color filters (21R,21G,21B) disposed on the light-transmissive substrate, a flattening layer (22) disposed on the color filters, and a plurality of electrodes including principal electrodes (5) and auxiliary electrodes (3) disposed on the flattening layer; each auxiliary electrode being disposed between an associated principal electrode and the flattening layer so as to be electrically connected with the associated principal electrode, and each principal electrode contacting the flattening layer at a spacing between an associated auxiliary electrode and an adjacent auxiliary electrode.
