A snap acting thermostatic disc assembly having a thermostatic disc element 20 responsive both to current and to ambient temperature is provided with an electrical contact (22) on a face surface on the disc element at one end thereof and a weld slug (24) at an opposite end of the disc element and has a fulcrum member (28, 28', 28") on the opposite face surface of the disc element in alignment with the weld slug. The fulcrum member is arranged to move the bending location of the disc element member away from the heat affected zone of the thermostatic metal caused by welding. In a second embodiment the snap acting disc element is used as an ambient temperature responsive control member.

A circuit breaker has two thin flat terminals embedded in an electrically insulating housing exposing respective broad flat sides of the terminals in spaced side-by-side relation to each other in a housing chamber. The circuit breaker has a thermostat metal member secured at one end to one exposed side of one terminal to mount the member extending along a chamber wall and has a contact at its opposite end to engage and disengage the other terminal to close and open a circuit in response to a selected current in the circuit. The contact comprises a material which erodes during repeated cycling of the circuit breaker. The thermostat metal member has a portion of reduced cross-sectional area adapted to burn out and separate the member into two sections to open the circuit if the contact welds or sticks to the other terminal. A stop on the housing intercepts movement of one of the member sections after burn out to avoid shorting of the circuit. An abutment on the housing prevents reclosing of the circuit after the contact has eroded to a selected extent. In one embodiment, an electrical resistance heater of positive coefficient of resistivity having an improved electrical wire insulation is wound on the thermostat metal member and retains the circuit in an effective open circuit condition until the heater circuit is separately interrupted to reset the breaker.

When an overcurrent flows through the heating resistor to generate heat therefrom and the temperature of the heat responsive body reaches a set level, the heat responsive body is inverted. Inverting motion of the heat responsive body is transmitted to the heating resistor through the coupler, and the current path is opened.

There is provided a switch having a new function for protection from excessive current. The switch includes a conductive movable member (9) and at least two terminals (1, 2, 3). By mechanically moving the movable member (9), the switch can be set to a state that the movable member (9) is simultaneously brought into contact with the two terminals (1, 2) and to a state that the movable member (9) is apart from one (1) of the two terminals (1, 2). At least one (2) of the two terminals (1, 2) is separated into a conductive contact unit (2a) which is brought into contact with the movable member (9) and a conductive connection unit (2c) which is electrically connected to an external element (not depicted). A PTC member (2b) is arranged so as to be sandwiched between the contact unit (2a) and the connection unit (2c). The PTC member (2b) may be a PTC element having a PTC material layer and a pair of conductive material layers arranged on the opposing surfaces.

Ein Temperaturwächter (10) mit einem bei Übertemperatur schaltenden Bimetall-Schaltwerk aus Bimetall-Scheibe und stromführender Federscheibe (22) weist einen ersten Heizwiderstand (53) auf, der dem Bimetall-Schaltwerk zugeordnet ist und bei betätigtem Bimetall-Schaltwerk im Sinne einer Selbsthaltefunktion wirkt. Dem Bimetall-Schaltwerk ist ein zweiter Heizwiderstand (54) zugeordnet, der bei zu hohem Stromfluß durch den Temperaturwächter (10) derart wirkt, daß das Bimetall-Schaltwerk schaltet, um so den Verbraucher vor Überstrom zu schützen. Das Bimetall-Schaltwerk ist dabei als Umschalter ausgelegt und so mit den beiden Heizwiderständen (53, 54) verschaltet, daß es in seinen beiden Schaltstellungen jeweils über ein stromführendes Teil (22) den durch den Temperaturwächter (10) fließenden Strom übernimmt.
