A method for controlling the ascent and descent of a tubular member (11) passing through a pipe or casing slip (12) into a well bore. A float control member is affixed beneath the top surface of the pipe or casing slip. The control member is activated to control the raising or lowering of the tubular member. A piston within a cylinder housing is positioned below the top surface of the slip. As the tubular member is lowered, but before there is significant weight on the supporting structure, the piston is moved to its maximum height extension. Once the slips are set and the weight of the tubular member is applied to the slips, the piston begins to descend in the cylinder housing floating the final descent of the string. The string may be raised by activating a pump to force fluid within the housing chamber, raising the piston and thereby raising or lifting the string.

The pipe-holding spider (11) that is normally mounted on the rig floor is supportably retained in a vertically movable retainer (12). The retainer is adapted for controllably elevating the spider above the rig floor when the pipe slips (24) within the spider are not engaged with the outer surface of the pipe string, thereby providing personnel access to a portion of the length of the pipe string below the elevated spider and above the rig floor. Personnel are provided with access to the pipe string for applying a fastener (34) to secure the control line to the pipe string. The control line is supplied from above the spider and is positioned by a control line guide (16) supported on the spider or retainer to pass through the spider outside the path of pipe gripping members within the spider.

The first one of a number of large diameter pipe joints is adapted to threadingly engage another large diameter pipe joint. The elevator is detachably securable to the upper end of the first joint, and is adapted to both lift and position the first joint while it is stabbed and tightened onto the string. The elevator is further adapted to co-operatively engage the rotary table (24) of the drilling rig to rotatably tighten the second joint to the first joint as the second joint is added to the string.

Service lines (or umbelicals) for the tong set are not connected during string (ps) rotation. In an alternate version of the apparatus, a fluid feed through swivel (11) is mounted on the tong set (9), secured to the necessary tong operating and control service fluid line, or lines, such that the tong set (9) can rotate with tong service lines between the tong set (9) and the snubbing unit (2) during rotation. In an alternate form, the tong set (9) is mounted on the jack head (6), independently of the rotary table, and the tong set (9) does not rotate when the rotary table rotates.
