To make it possible to process not only lump but also fine ore economically over a wide range of quantities, the plant has at least one fluidised bed reactor (15, 16) to accept fine ore, a reducing gas inlet (21) thereinto, an exhaust gas outlet (22) from the fluidised bed reactor (15) and an extractor (34) for the reduction product formed in said fluidised bed reactor (15, 16), in which the top gas outlet (14) of the shaft furnace (1) and the exhaust gas outlet (22) of the fluidised bed reactor (15) open into a cleaning device (23) and then into a heater (25, 26) from which leaves the reducing gas inlet line (21) of the fluidised bed reactor (15, 16).

An approximately horizontal inlet pipe section (8) of the immersion pipe (7) discharges into an approximately vertical immersion pipe section (9) of the immersion pipe (7) from the inlet opening on a side wall of the housing (1); the inlet pipe section (8) can be connected as a duct by a sealed joint to a drainage pipe (15) such as a sink unit drainage pipe; and the outflow opening (4) of the housing (1) discharges into an outflow channel. To facilitate particularly simple cleaning of the concealed siphon and ensure ease of access to the outflow channel, the immersion pipe section (9) of the immersion pipe (7) is formed as an integral part of a rising pipe section (10) in the manner of communicating vessels to create a siphon.

Described is a method of producing molten crude iron or molten crude steel from particulate material containing iron oxide using a fluidized bed, the iron oxide-containing material being first reduced in at least one preliminary-reduction stage (7) by a reducing gas and subsequently reduced to iron sponge in a final-reduction stage (8). The iron sponge is melted in a smelting gasification zone (11) into which carbon carriers and oxygen-containing gas is fed and a reducing gas containing CO and H2 is produced which is used in the final-reduction stage (8) where it reacts, is drawn off, and is subsequently used in the preliminary-reduction stage (7) where it reacts, is drawn off, is scrubbed and is finally discharged as export gas, at least part of the reacted reducing gas being freed of CO2, heated and used as recycled reducing gas for the reduction of the iron oxide-containing material. In order to ensure that the reduction proceeds without the fluidized bed 'sticking', by minimizing the amounts of hydrocarbon carriers used, part of the reducing gas flowing from the final reduction (8) to the preliminary reduction (7) is split off, scrubbed, the CO2 removed and the gas heated and subsequently used again in the final-reduction stage (8).
