One or more stubs may be implemented on the circuit board near the dipole antenna array. Each antenna stub may create an impedance in the dipole elements which enable the antenna elements to operate efficiently while positioned in close proximity to the circuit board ground layer.

A method for providing on-demand wireless services is disclosed. A service requested by a wireless access device is provided via a first virtual wireless base station presence at a first wireless base station. Degradation in signal quality between the wireless access device and the first wireless base station is detected (420). It is then determined that the wireless access device is preparing to roam from a coverage area of the first wireless base station when the degradation in signal quality meets a predetermined threshold. A second wireless base station is identified that provides better signal quality than the degraded signal quality from the first wireless base station. The second wireless base station authenticates (430) the wireless access device. Authentication requirements are reduced based on information provided to the second wireless base station from the first wireless base station. Then, a second virtual wireless base station presence is initiated at the second wireless base station to provide the requested service. A corresponding apparatus is disclosed as well.

A system and method for a wireless link to a remote receiver includes a communication device for generating RF and a planar antenna apparatus for transmitting the RF. The planar antenna apparatus includes selectable antenna elements, each of which has gain and a directional radiation pattern. The directional radiation pattern is substantially in the plane of the antenna apparatus. Switching different antenna elements results in a configurable radiation pattern. Alternatively, selecting all or substantially all elements results in an omnidirectional radiation pattern. One or more directors and/or one or more reflectors may be included to constrict the directional radiation pattern. The antenna apparatus may be conformally mounted to a housing containing the communication device and the antenna apparatus.

Each authenticated user is assigned a random secret generated so as to be unique to the user. The secret is associated with a wireless interface belonging to the user, so that no other wireless interface may use the same secret to access the network. A switching network couples one or more of the selectable elements to the communication circuitry and provides impedance matching regardless of which or how many of the antenna elements are selected. During a communication technique, an access point provides a message that includes one or more public land mobile network identifiers of one or more cellular-telephone networks that are supported by the access point. Then, an electronic device, which received the message, provides a candidate list specifying one or more access points that support communication with a cellular telephone network to a radio node that is associated with this cellular-telephone network. By communicating with a wireless-local-area-network (WLAN) controller, the radio node validates the one or more access points, and selects a target access point based on performance feedback from the WLAN controller. Next, the radio node instructs the electronic device to associate with the target access point. Moreover, the radio node and the target access point establish a secure-communication pathway, which allows the radio node to communicate data to the electronic device via the access point using an LTE Wi-Fi aggregation protocol.
